So 5qt jugs of PP is way up. 5qt jugs of M1 is up. But YB fell back to $12 for 5qt Jug.

Today began my move to hedge against what could be brutal inflation in the near (and mid and far) future. Today I bought oil at Wally (enough to get me about 3-4 years out). This wkend will be more non-perishables (in serious quantity) - toilet paper from Sams comes to mind. etc.

I'm a Synthetic guy - but at $12/Jug of YB - I went that route and plan to add a qt of PP to each fill in my Mazda 6 and do 8k OCIs. I may brood on this and have kept my Wally receipt - but I wouldn't want to take M1 out much further than 10k, so the real savings hit goes with YB+PP (have got, and will get PP at rebate prices (sub $4/qt).

Also bought multi jugs of Pennzoil High Mileage for $12/jug - will use this in my Sienna at about 1 yr OCIs (limited miles/yr on it now). Will also use it in my '88 323 - but once again brooding on whether I should sell the 323 - engine is perfect, but that puppy is showing it's age in other ways, and unwanted money outlays may be in the offing. (?)

Can't say that stocking up on non-perishables is a bad idea at this time, but adding a quart of Platinum to a YB oil change will not make it an 8K oil. Might work, but I would not run any conventional oil out to 8K. Just my opinion.

+2 I would never run a conventional out to 8000 miles, even if it was half synthetic and half conventional.

More than $2/qt for dino is not very good price. If you can wait few months, there will be synthetic oil for sale by CSK or PepBoys for less than $2/qt (after rebate).

My current stash will last more than 3 years with various M1 for $2/qt, Maxlife synthetic for $1.49/qt and $10/5qt jugs, Valvoline SynPower for $0.99/qt, Chevron Supreme and Halvoline deposit shield for $0.49/qt, Chevron Delo for $4/gal ... All of these oils were bought with sale prices + rebates and clearances ... None were bought with regular price.

Dang, Johnny thru a wrench in it. Perhaps back to square one on my simple plan.

But, my owner's manual OCI is 5k severe, 7.5 normal. This car will actually be pretty close to the "normal" definition. Would see 8k miles in about 7 months. Thus my thouhts that YB might be able to handle it, but the 1qt PP should get it there. (??)

Further, at some point (and I'm not sure exactly where that point lies) there is some concern of some additives falling out of suspension from oil dormancy. I don't know that three years is too long, but five or more might be pushing it. There is a practical limit to buying ahead ...

Perhaps Johnny could enlighten us a bit on the details.

I wish I could, but believe a chemist or oil formulator would be more qualified than me on this one. I do have a rule of thumb I live by that was handed down to me by someone years ago.

1. I do not store any lubricants in my garage in the winter (Here in WI.)
2. If it has been on the shelf for 3-years, I recycle it.
