What a joke. I've been using firefox for years anyway. On rare occasions, I will find a site that will only work on microsoft internet explorer, so I will use it. So I guess now, I need to buy their windows 7 software. I'm not sure my 2 GB ram, 3.0 GHZ P4 is enough to handle windows 7. well, I will probably use google chrome as my back up if I find that rare site that won't work with firefox. rant off..

When Se7en was beta, I ran it on a 3.2GHz P4 with 2GB ram. Ran perfectly fine. Never noticed any lag.
Though, I dont know if I would bother on such a machine. Thats reaching the end of its lifecycle and that $100 would probably better be put towards a newer system.. :P

Microsoft has a strict end-of-life time table. You get about 5 years after the operating system stops being shipped by microsoft until it's non-security related updates are cancelled. Vista and 7 have come out since XP, it's 3rd generation and about 5 years have passed. It is frustrating but I understand their goals. I worked in software too and in IT support for PCs. Supporting 3 generations of software or hardware is a real pain and becomes unmanageable.

I agree with Colt, spend the $100 on a new machine instead of upgrading a system like that to Win7.

Why can't you just keep using IE8?

I can't believe the number of people (including my company and work computer) that are still using a 10 year old operating system.

+ 1 would put the $100.00 into a new system.

Why? What are the benefits of the newer operating systems?

I can. XP is stable and has relatively low hardware requirements. Remember Vista? That scared off a lot of IT departments. Microsoft is now recovering with Windows 7.

This is how they force you to upgrade.

2 Gb of RAM is more than enough for the 32 bit version of W7. My system uses less than 1.5 Gb of the available 4GB of RAM, My 64 bit systems are using less than 3 GB of RAM unless you load them up with SharePoint server; SQL Server (the actual DB, not just SSMS or SSRS)

I was on two different corporate W7 upgrades at two very large companys early last year - and at my current company we've been deploying W7 for approx 9 months.

oddly enough, Microsoft keeps extending their support of XP and personally I'd like to see it go. not because there is anything wrong with it - but because we write web-based software and cant control our users desktops - which means we have to support all combos of OS's and Browsers. grrrr....

Here's a crazy idea: Keep using IE8. Or would that not give you something to complain about?

I can also understand why people are still using XP. I've had XP professional and Office Professional 2003 installed on this "Top of the Line in it's Time" IBM T-42P since I got it new in December of 2004.

All I can do is rave about XP as a Great stable OS with no real problems along with this IBM. I will miss using XP along with this solid and dependable, last of the line, original IBM's, when their retirement comes soon.

Too bad IBM is out of the laptop business because this machine is the best I've ever had. I might look into Lenovo as a replacement, when the time comes, if their quality is as good as this IBM has been.

Being able to use new software, you know? Just what the OP is complaining about? Developers don't support older operating systems forever as it stops being cost effective and just begins to be a limitation.

AGREE! I moved most of my department's 400 computers to Windows 7 in the first 18 months, as time allowed. At about 75% Win7 now.

Benefits were obvious, much lower spyware infection rate, more flexible group policy configurations, FAR better TCP/IP stack that translates to much improved network I/O, searchable start menu, 64 bit, on & on ....

Living in the past is of no use. We don't insist on 10 year old Linux distributions, why should we get excited about a 10 year old version of Windows??

Funny this came up, I thought about going back to a Commodore and firing up the C-128 and running the GEOS 128 OS.

Either that or setting up an old 486 and running Windows 3.11

Better power management on laptops by far compared to XP and Vista.

7 doesn't suffer any performance hits from any "bloat" it may have and is more responsive on my laptop than Vista that came pre-loaded.

Better security with UAC. In 7 they revamped how UAC works making it much less intrusive when at its default settings.

XP virtualization mode essentially running a copy of XP in a virtual machine on top of 7 for those programs that absolutely won't work under 7. if you have the hardware to support it (most of the mid-grade and up Intel procs support this).

The only downside is that I have a couple of programs that won't run on it (MeGUI) though that is more of a 64 vs 32 bit issue than

More than 1 operating system behind and you're too far behind. The only reason to run an older operating system like XP is on a very poor spec'd computer. And if that is the case you are better off running Ubuntu or Linux Mint or some other distro.

People don't realize that just because XP was great through all of the Vista days, now that 7 is out you are seriously risking security and will soon be very vulnerable to attacks when XP support is gone completely.

Windows 7 is the best version of Windows to come out since the days of 98/XP. Smooth, stable and lots of enhanced security features vs. the previous Microsoft mistakes.

And also, Chrome is definitely the best all-around browser currently on the market for most users. If you need more extensions jump over to firefox 4 or better yet the firefox 5 beta is great!

XP has been newly licensed on new netbooks as recently as last year (if not still today.)

I like having the ability to change my desktop wallpaper compared to Win 7 Starter. Seriously? This is like Ford only selling the stripped Escort Pony in dung brown trying to shame you into spending more money.

Why would you buy anything with the Starter addition on it?
