I just replaced a seal in my Gravely's 30-inch rotary mower. I run RP 85w140 because I have gallons of the stuff on hand (I also use it in my Dodge truck). The way the gearbox is designed, you can have the top open and look down into the gearbox (its a 90* gearbox with bevel cut gears).
It was neat to spin the input and watch the RP climb the "pinion" gear with only the RPM I could spin by hand (maybe 20RPM?). I know there was concern about whether an oil that thick would climb when it was cold (it was about 20* here this AM).
It was just neat to see the gear oil climb with so little RPM. Also, I know it wasn't much RPM, but the RP didn't entrain any air at all...
