Only use SAE 5W-20 viscosity grade where recommended by vehicle manufacturer.

From Here

Just kinda interesting that some here are praising xw-20 oils, yet Castrol says not to use it unless specified. I wonder why? I don't really have an opinion on 20 weight oils (Ok, I do, but it has no influence on this post).

I know, it's from Castrol, so trust it as far as you can throw it.

Do you expect Castrol, or any oil maker, to recommend oil the car manufacturer doesn't specify?

People who praise 0W-20 probably use it in engines that call for 0W-20.

OK guys...I believe it "runs deeper" than that...you don't see Castrol making a special point to tell you to only use 5w30 where specified by the manufacturer even though that, I am sure, would be their official position. I think there are genuine concerns about using that oil in engines for which it is not designed, AEHaas' Ferrari notwithstanding...one UOA does not a scientific premise make.

m'man,

The issue here is why Castrol caveats the 5W-20 but not other grades...

If I'm not mistaken, I've noticed on PDS form other oils (M1 comes to mind), that say to use this grade when/where recommended by the manufacturer (honda, ford...). I don't find this odd, but perhaps I don't see it in the same conceptual context.

As far as noting such restriction towards use, I would think the reasoning falls under liability. They're just protecting themselves should someone throw this oil in say a high mileage towing vehicle with higher clearences in the heat of summer. Things just may come to a head over this OCI where the engine gives and since this is one of those times where the person wanted to try something new and perhaps hoping to gain some mpg...they may look at the oil to blame, maybe not.

Unless bearing surface area is spec'ed for such a lighter weight oil and the clearences aren't excessive, I believe the wear rate study based on lube HTHS may play out with increasing wear rates. I do also understand that additives play a role to, but only so much I feel.

This is nothing more than my opinion.

Why?

Maybe because there is limited data on long-term vehicle use of 5W-20

For the sake of this discussion, ignore thinned-out 30 weights. Adding this disclosure is Castrol's way of legal protection, should anything "revealing" surface down the road.

Moribundman, the lack of disclosure on the other weights probably ties in with what you said:

I suspect its legal jargon to protect them from class action suits. I mean, if you can get $1 million from a fast food place for spilling coffee on yourself ... you get it.
