Interesting development at Canadian W-M's

I was working a shift at my W-M last night, and as usual I check the oil shelves to see if there are new products or sales. I saw a different-looking bottle in our 'Tech 2000' oil section, so I took a closer look. Lo and begold, among the regular T2000 bottles, there were bottles of 'Super Tech' 10W-40 oil.

These bottles had the exact same labels as the Super Tech oil bottles do in the US; the red and blue ones w/ the 'honeycomb' shapes on them. The bottles themselves were the exact same ones that T2000 comes in, and they still say made in Canada. I looked around and found that we had Super Tech coolant, Super Tech Trans Fluid, and 10W-40 oil. Everything else was regular T2000 stock.

I wonder, if after years of promoting the T2000 name, is W-M now going to start using the Super Tech label from the US? I'm assuming its the same stuff in the bottles, that is, made by Safety Kleen Canada.....

Thats weird. I have been noticing more and more supertech products lately though. The first was coolant and now there are quite a few things. I hope they don't phase out the tech 2000.

WL, I don't think its going to matter if they 'phase out' T2000; b/c I think the Super Tech stuff is the exact same product, just re-labeled. W-M Canada, AFAIK, has a good, close working relationship with S-K, so I can't imagine them sourcing their oil from somewhere else. I just think its interesting that they are going to this effort to re-label, and I assume, 'integrate' the US and Canada products...

BTW, I personally thing the ST labelling is MUCH better than the T2000 labelling...it was getting really old and '80's' looking.....

That was what I like about it. I would always make the joke that the oil is so cheap because they haven't spent any money in years to design a new label.

Would supertech oil filters be too much to hope for?

I would also love to see supertech filters in canadian walmarts instead of the the wall of orange doom!

I noticed this too. Supertech 10W40 started showing up a few weeks ago. Last weekend we started getting Super Tech 10W30 and ATF too. The invasion has begun.

I noticed the new bottles have the same product number as the old ones, and since they're still marked "Wal-Mart Canada" on the back I guess they're just consolidating to Supertech throughout the system.

I like the old bottle style better actually. A nice consistent maroon label. Now there's these garish orange and blue honeycomb things. Blech.

I spotted the Supertech 10w40 at my local Walmart last week too, and forgot to mention it here. I noticed it's SL rated though, not SM.

Tech2000 was also WalMart's US house brand many years ago. I guess they may just be getting around to conforming the Canadian house brand with the change previously made in the US. Tech2000 may have sounded special in 1995, but here in 2007 it sounds, well, old!

I was just at Walmart here in Canada, and looks like they have a sale on Pennzoil Conventional oil. It's a 3.78L jug selling for $7.98, not a bad deal in my opinion. I ended up buying a box of 4 jugs. They mostly had 5W30 weight, very few 10W30.

I was in Walmart again today and now they've got Supertech 10w30 as well, and Supertech ATF. Both the 10w30 and the 10w40 say they are made in Canada though, so I don't think they are the same Supertech oils as in the US, but they are simply changing the name from Tech 2000 to Supertech now, and are probably still supplied by Safety Kleen.


So I doubt we'll see the Supertech oil filters show up here.

I don't believe that I have ever asked a Walmart employee a question about ANYTHING in their store... I have seen other people do so, shivered at the response and walked away.

Well actually he asked me if I needed help finding my oil filter and just for giggles I asked him about supertech. I would never have approached him. Earlier I heard him tell someone that tech 2000 was recycled oil. It is re-refined of course.

Recycled vs. rerefined is a rather fine distinction. If you take a used plastic milk jug, clean it, melt it and make a new milk jug have you "recycled", "remanufacturing", "remilkified" it or what?

If they use the same bottle style as the US Supertech, people might take more notice of us/canada price differences.
