One of our local T.V. stations recently did a small segment on the evening news. They tested the "TORNADO" on a somewhat new Crown Victoria V8. They ran the car without the Tornado for a select amount of miles, refilled the gas tank, checked the mileage and got mid 20's mpg. Then they installed the Tornado and ran the exact same rout, refilled the gas tank and got around 40 mpg this time. I couldn't beleive what I was seeing. I had read so many magazine/news paper articles that claimed that the Tornado did nothing, and also reading different web sites that also said that the Tornado did ziltch, I just couldn't beleive this... I know! There are always claims that people are getting better mpg and some indepentant lab test that shows a certain % increase in mpg, but Im still not buying the thing. Not for $69.99! Only when everyone is getting better mpg will I buy this thing.

$5 says they forgot to reset the the trip odmeter after the first fill up.

Holy Crap!!

I never expected so much input.
Thank you all for your comments, knowledge, and jokes (magnets).

What I meant of Tahoe's exhaust is that it's less restrictive and it's not a larger diameter. I'm not sure what the back pressure is, but I will research it.

I do know one person who has a K&N intake and filter, has re-programmed their computer with a Hypertech Programmer (I think it's a Hypertech). His truck has the same 5.7 and he did notice a power increase. As many of you mentioned, it's the right foot that can determine gas mileage. Like I said, my friend did these things to his 5.7 and hasn't changed back to stock. He has a light right foot too. I think I will do some experimenting, along with more research, to determine what I can do.

I have some heat sheilding material I may wrap around the intake. Also, a lower temperature termostat, and/or performance pulley.

I'm curious what you guys and girls have to say about those things?

Thanks everyone, I pre-ciate it!

I'll post notes to let you all know what I've done to my Tahoe, right or wrong.

That's the best way to do it for mileage and general driveability.
I'd always go for less back pressure in the exhaust, as long as it isn't creating problems.
Unless it throws a code (Code 32), I think you're good. You'd probably need to do headers to get that code.

I wouldn't bother with changing the thermostat or pulleys. There are many variables that were considered by the engineers when they designed those parts, and there are probably good reasons they did it the way they did. These aren't components from which they saved money or reduced noise specing it the way they did.

Aside from going to a lower temp thermostat ..just about any quality aftermarket part will have some beneficial effect ... at least "apparently". It's just a real loser in terms of rate of return. I spent about $600 total for my roller rockers for my 4.0. The yield was maybe 11-15 hp variable ...or about 50-75 bucks a hp ..and the thing never sees over 2200 rpm on an average day. A Borla cat back system for a 199X (I think) 5.0 Mustang (from a former dyno graph on their site) yielded about 11 hp ..at some astronomical rpm. Cost ..probably over $500 FOB and not user friendly for the install(??).

A package vehicle is a compromise for one size that is designed to fit many/all and do it at a competitive price. If you're subjecting it to a narrow set of conditions for a majority of its operational time, then you may be able to shift that compromised design to favor your use ..but you're probably going to outstrip any gains with the cost of the part.

It's more a situation of experiencing nature's way of saying that you make too much money

road_rascal,
Did you enjoy the piece? I still won't buy a Tornado. Because this is the only source of info that I have seen or read that shows an increase in mpg or power, I would want a 30 day trial with a money back garantee.

I like how the guy says it helps mix the fuel and air together. Maybe someone should show him what the insides of a 4.6 Ford engine looks like

The news station would have to explain the inconsistency, but my guess is that the tank probably wasn't as full before the first run.
