Intake manifold gasket replacement

I am looking to replace the inake manifold gasket on a Vibe. I got an updated gasket from the Toyota dealer (not sure why GM doesn't carry the updated gasket).

My question: what should I use to clean the surface where the manifold gasket sits?

Also, do I just put the new gasket in place, or do I need to put grease on it in order to keep it in place?

Any other suggestions on the process?

Brake clean and a scotchbrite dishwashing pad should clean that pretty well. Rinse with a paper towel and more brake cleaner.

But don't let scotchbrite fuzz into the motor, it's pretty bad on a molecular scale.

You should be able to hold the gasket in place with two bolts on opposite ends sticking through their holes as you line things up.

You do not need to drain the coolant.

Those helped a lot mike, thanks. Still unsure to just put in the gasket, or if I should put a bit of grease on one side?

Also unsure about how much to torque the manifold bolts? Someone on GenVibe said 37 ft lbs for the bolts, and 22 ft lbs for the two manifold nuts. The TSB for the repair says 22 ft lbs for everything. I'm thinking of just doing 22 for everything, that will be plenty tight to keep it on and better that than too tight and squish the gasket causing all sorts of other problems.

I hope you are not planning on you using your 1/2 torque wrench for the 22 ft-lb. It is NOT accurate at that range. You want a smaller torque wrench.

Try to remember how tight it was when you take it off.
