Insurance Agent- Turn Off

Just having a conversation.
I got a new agent from a online source. Had the best pages and the whole organization was first class.

I was speaking with the owner-main agent.
I am getting insurance from him and that isn't a big deal.

But...….. he annoys the heck out of me and I know better but I want to tell him he is a complete turn off.
I'll just keep my lips zipped

First call I get the life story. It's all good but I didn't ask for it.
Next-his words- I hear of his complete athletic career. My mind is racing trying to remember who he played for etc. He talked a big game.
So I asked him- turns out it was in high school- how sad for a 55 year old- I knew his age as that was in his life story.

Then he tells me he is just like the little guys out there. He too pays for his own insurance and on and on...…….

Next...……. He tells me to call him Tuesday. I did. He tells me he is on a cruise to Jamaica. I apologize for calling and he says
That's actually good. That way people understand I'm just like them- the little guy. He says that all the time.
The guy is a load. Too much nonsense.... It really is a turn off and to me a business killer...…….


I know get another agent- come renew time I will. lol

Once you have insurance.....why keep calling your agent? If price, company and coverage is good just keep paying and call it a day. Now why do I carry full coverage on a 2005 Saturn Ion is beyond me but I still try and never have contact with my agent. Of course, even I know "the little guy" rarely takes vacations in Jamaca.

I'm assuming this guy's name isn't Al Bundy...there's probably an expectation with insurance guys that many talk up their agency or how they're better in x way than their competitors or they're phony folksy like being a "little guy" who knows what it's like, etc. That turns me off...but it's like having an expectation of talking to a stand up comic when the IRS calls you in...some things can go with the territory depending on the type of insurance...especially if Mr. Bundy cold-called by the hundreds and ate ramen for the first 3-4 years in building an agency.

Yeah, I have no clue who my agent is. I have Geico for car insurance so it's whoever answers the phone. You can also do things online too so you don't even have to talk to anyone. Property insurance is through an agency, but I hardly ever talk to the guy, he just sends over a new policy every year and I pay it.

He sounds insecure. Whatever, all of us have something to make us special.

As if you didn't already know, Insurance is all about the reputation of the company, the agent is not the one who decides what level of service, or professionalism you get WHEN YOU CLAIM from the company for each dollar spent on the policy.

However, a knowledgeable agent will make you aware of details that might be missed by an order taker.

I am so glad I get my insurance through USAA. No insurance agent to deal with- everything is online or via phone to very professional and efficient customer service folks.

My wife's father was retired Army (now deceased) and her son is active USAF. Can we get USAA?

Because I won't have to deal with him again.
This is an in depth ordeal that required me to talk to an agent or I wouldn't have.
I, like most others have many policies and I never talk to anyone except the house inspections
you get when houses are over a certain age or value etc.


I don't care if the guy was a billionaire honestly. It sounds like he deals with a bunch of rift raft and maybe that
is why he plays up the little guy nonsense.

I've had insurance agents and insurance companies I didn't like, for reasons I won't bore people with. It was easy enough to take my business elsewhere.

I had one that became a drunk. I dumped him and I heard from him often over 10 years until he died.
So did everyone else. Sad affair.

My guess is that some percentage of people simply like small talk and he's found that it works for him.

Hard to tell from your description of him, but I'd probably not have been offended by his stories. However, I find most people interesting.

It drives me absolutely insane when I am on vacation and half the people by the pool at a resort or on a remote beach are yelling into their cellphones about work stuff.
That's EXACTLY what I'm trying to get away from!

The worst I can remember was some guy on St. John who spent a good couple hours yelling at some foreman on a construction site while we were by the resort pool. At one point he told the guy to "just tear their fence down and start building there" because "it'll be too late when they realize we're on their property." What a jackwagon...luckily, he was the type who just spent his whole vacation by the pool at the resort so he didn't pollute the beautiful beaches that we would visit every day. Do you really need to fly to St. John to sit by a pool and read a novel part of the time and scream into a cell phone the rest of it?
On our next trip there, we were talking to a middle aged couple in a taxi and they asked about our favorite places on the island...we told them Hawksnest Beach, Maho Bay, Coral Bay, etc. We asked them the same question and it turned out they were just going from bar to bar in Cruz Bay getting hammered every night and then sleeping late into the day, but they really wanted to get out to a beach once before they left. Their choice in how to spend their time, but I didn't get it...my daughter and I were on our way to Annaberg Sugar Plantation, which was beautiful as well as an educational destination. Pretty sobering when we saw how tiny the slaves' quarters were...
