I am planning to install an oil bypass filer on my '95 Tercel by directing the returned oil to the oil pan with a Self Tapping Hollow Bolt.

This is the first time I am using this bolt. My questions are:

1) Can I punch a hole on the oil pan without removing it?
2) Will this procedure produce metal particles that fall inside the oil pan?

Thanks.

1. How will a nut hold the tapered bolt?
2. How are you going to get a nut on the inside of the oil pan, even IF it would work?

If losing the bolt is a concern, put JB Weld on the threads when threading the STHB into the oil pan. Once the JB Weld cures the bolt is practically welded to the pan.

The small metal shavings won't hurt a thing. Even if they get past the pickup screen the full flow will catch them. No issues to be concerned with really, just punch the pan and thread the STHB in.

Actually the answers are "yes" and "no." The installation involves punching a hole with a tapered punch and screwing the "self tapping" bolt into the tapered hole. There are no metal pieces produced by this process, the threads just bite into the metal and stretch it out of the way. Usually the thread is left hand so that the thread is the opposite of the removable part of the bolt.

Have you considered using a hollow drain plug? If your drain plug isn't too low (you don't want to bottom out and shear it off), just remove it and install one of these:

You can attach this to a 4AN elbow, which would be attached to your hose. That's what I have had on my car for over 4 years witout any problems.

Good idea. You can also get that same fitting in a 90 degree fashion at a Parker dealer so you won't have to worry about clearance issues. Just take your drain plug to them, they will match the threads and get you what you want.

I seriously thought about going that route, but didn't want to lose my Fumoto.

Use an Amsoil swivel adaptor for the oil return. You drill a hole in the oil fill cap install the fitting and you are done. I used one in my 1988 4 cyl Camry.

I've tried the route thru the oil cap for my 2003 Toyota echo, and do not like that oil being sucked thru the PCV valve. Currently the oil is returned thru the oil drain plug, which is shared with the pre-luber pump.

For my 1995 Toyota Tercel I want to try something different.
