Installing a inline water filter to an air tank

Hey all I recently posted about my impact dying and needing a new one. Well our tanks at work are pretty old and put a lot of water into the hoses and through the guns. Upon taking my impact apart I quickly realized that's why it quit...... I'm going to get a filter for my hose at work so I don't have this issue again. My air hose comes right off the tank it hooks up with the quick connect. My question is on installation can I use the quick couplers to connect it to the tank and then in the other side of the seperator connect my hose. I don't have a lot of experience with these so all advice is appreciated.
 
At my dad's shop they have a decent sized machine, a couple feet tall, that the air goes through. He called it a dryer. Looked expensive.
 
For this use I would use a Desiccant Snake that would be installed at the point of use. Your biggest problem is the air hose plumbed directly off the tank bad bad practice.
 
You need to run the air thorough 25 feet of black pipe, so the air can cool and condense. Need drip legs at compressor connection, and below quick connect.


if you can't do that, build a small trap at compressor.

shouldnt be a problem soon with winter temps moisture in the air will be way down.

What exactly is that? I agree I don't like it at all!!

I use another airhose with quick connect fittings on mine. Compressor into a 5 foot hose, into the filter, into my 30 foot air airhose
 
I'd prefer hard piped with a QC just on the output side of the dryer. Probably a ball valve in there too to allow service down the line.

That said if taking the system down to plumb this is impractical, I'd just put it in with QCs. I personally built one like this to use since my air system is modular and portable.

If you encounter flow issues, you could always attach it inline with barbed fittings,though you'd lose a bit of hose length.
 
What about an inline air/water separator at the point of use, like this HF (that appears to be the same one as on Amazon for twice the price) one? http://www.harborfreight.com/air-tools/air-tool-accessories/oilwater-separator-68246.html

Slap a female quick-connect onto it, and it might get the job done. I'm imagining that since the impact is mostly vertical, having correct orientation shouldn't be much of an issue. It would add length for other tools that need to be used in tighter spaces, though.

Would I be able to have a quick connect on both ends of that seperator you think ?
 
I have water separators hooked to male and female quick connects. That way I can put 2 of them in line with my hose.

At best, they are "somewhat" effective. I still get moisture through my air tools when ever the compressor's tank has accumulated some water in it. As soon as I drain the tank, problem solved.

The better solution is to have an automatic drain on the tank. That way, moisture is drained at regular intervals and the system remains reasonably dry.
 
I bought a kobalt inline filter I plan on attaching it to the tank and then my hose to the filter. It was 13 dollars. They will be moving the shop around and upgrading stuff shortly so I didn't want to invest a lot with not knowing what will happen in the sho. So for now this should work I hope!
