TIA- I wanted to try Bit Defender free for Win 7 instead of Comodo AV which became a pig after an upgrade. I successfully removed Comodo AV and gave Bit Defender a try and Chrome stopped working. I removed it and installed Avast Free and everything is fine. I would like to try Bit Defender free again. Any ideas as to what is wrong? I have a complete image of the system saved so going back to the current setup is easy if things don't work out.

Thanks!

I use microsoft security essentials and everything works fine.
take out bit defender and install Microsoft's malware programs (free)

I have been using Bit Defender in conjunction with Opera(now a half-azzed version of Chrome) and Internet Exploder .No problems so far.I recently installed Ice Dragon with no apparent problems.

So I have no experience with interactions with Chrome. But it seems odd to have compatibility issues with a popular product like Chrome.

Anything like this noted on any of the dedicated computer forums?

Good Luck!

I checked and all I could find was them suggesting restoring Chrome default settings, which I did. MSE is garbage, I wouldn't even consider it.

I was considering ditching Win 7 when Linux Mint 17 rolls out but I have some software that I don't think will work well. I could just stick with Avast Free and call it a day. But I have the time to tinker and thought I'd ask here.

Antivirus annoyances

I tried Bitdefender and it caused repeating system errors. Took it off, all is well.

Thanks! I missed that thread. I'm probably better off with Avast Free then. I liked BD because it got better ratings, but if it doesn't work with my system the better ratings are a moot point.

Stick with Avast free, Bitdefender doesn't impress me at all. Avast is the best antivirus in my opinion, It's never given me a problem!

I would also suggest malwarebyte's antimalware, free version doesn't have real time monitoring, but you can run it every few days or once a week in conjuction with an antivirus. It is very highly rated. I also like SpyBot S&D is very good too.

I tried the paid version of Bit Defender and didn't like it at all. I thought the interface was kludgey and there were a lot of crashes with it. Not computer crashes, but the BD software itself would crash. It wasn't impressive.

I have moved to Eset and find it to be much better. I've run Avast before, and it was good, but I thought it used a lot of computer resources. Eset seems to be very light weight.

I use both, thanks. I'll look into Eset.

I have Eset Smart Security, I didn't mention because I thought you wanted FREE; however they have Family packages on sale sometimes. I scored 5 license package each for a year for 18 dollars. I will look around and post back if I find something.

I don't want to pay for AV, I never did and would prefer not to start paying now. Avast seems fine, I'll probably stick with it. I was just wondering why BD hosed Chrome, and was hoping someone else had a work around.

I'm not sure why BD did that to chrome, but like I said, I've never been impressed with Bitdefender.

I've been using strictly Avast free for over a year, and it's the only AV I will recommend.

Holly Stewart, senior program manager of the Microsoft Malware Protection Center, told Dennis Technology Labs that Microsoft made a decision to switch to what it calls a "baseline strategy".
"We had an epiphany a few years ago, back in 2011, where we realised we had a greater calling and that was to protect all Microsoft customers," she said. "But you can’t do that with a monoculture and you can’t do that with a malware-catching ecosystem that is not robust and diverse."
Rather than focus on making its own antivirus the best in the business, Stewart said Microsoft was "doing everything we can to protect against real threats" and passing data on those threats to antivirus makers, so multiple parties can target the problems.

I have cleaned up many, MANY computers that were running MSE and it thought they were just hunky-dorey whilst NOD32 and MWB show the computer to be absolutely infested.
