Installed a filter minder

I checked and it moved.,

I just put a new outer filter every 2nd oil change (500hrs). Same with hydraulic filters, fuel, etc.

For most of my stuff that's maybe every 2 or 3 years.
 
I assume it would too... but a Fram air filter only costs 20 bucks at Wallieworld so its a no brainer to replace it once in awhile instead of waiting.. same mentality as trying to do oil analysis and extending drain intervals versus just changing the oil for s person like me... I'm never going to wear this truck out, but I might as well do some routine maintenance a couple times a year even though I know I could go longer. ...
It's not the same. It's actually more like the opposite.

Neglecting your oil is likely to destroy the engine. Neglecting your air filter does no engine harm whatsoever. In the worst case, it plugs and you lose airflow and the engine stalls. But long before that happens you will observe low power.

So if you neglect your air filter, you have an innocuous fail mode that does no long term engine damage and provides plenty of warning. That's not at all the case of neglecting oil changing, which does major long term engine damage and will cause a very expensive failure, often without any warning at all.

This is why the "cheap insurance" argument for more frequent oil changes does not apply to frequent air filter changes whatsoever. Insurance is for catastrophic events. An OEM style paper filter will not dust out an engine due to neglect.

NOTE: this does not apply to aftermarket style filters where can indeed dust out an engine if neglected. There's a reason OEMs never use these style filters, and it's not just cost.
 
2 days of dust storm driving down, now over 10,000 miles on the filter and still no reading. Probably have at least one day of bad dust storms later this week.
 
Well it's been a year. Still no reading, haven't put many miles on the truck since march. It's been warm and my Nissan leaf once again has acceptable range.
 
Been putting more miles on it since I splattered that deer with my wife's car.
Had 2 or 3 dust storms since may, one that was fire smoke, dust and ash that lasted all day.
14,000 miles now, still no reading so I took it out, blew it off and shopvac'ed it. It's starting to look a little dirty now.
That last air filter probably had 50,000 to 100,000 miles on it and it didn't give a reading. I would estimate that the old air filter was at least 4 times as dirty as my current 14k mile filter.
 
I installed one on the 2010 Ford explorer 4L. New microguard select air filter is already showing 13''h2o a I have even really spun the engine up as fast as it will go. Pretty sure the main restriction forward of the throttle plate is the approximately 2 inch diameter maf sensor.
The dodge Dakota 5.2l is about 1L bigger and makes around 20 to 30 more HP and the air filter is only slightly bigger than that found in the Ford. The dodge doesn't use a maf.

Wouldn't matter unless the filter minder is down stream of the MAF sensor. I'd think ideally the location of the filter minder should be between the clean side of the air filter and the MAF sensor location.

Yes I was going to put it in the air box as I normally do but I saw that restrictive looking air intake and thought I'll just try this first. I'm sure the air filter box will produce no reading for a while just as I've found with the dodge.
I can see if there's an upgrade maf available because my wife thinks it's gutless. She's been spoiled by the instant power of gasoline and electric.
