Inside intake valve chambers thick dark crusty scale, and the same inside intake runners and on the swirl plates.

I scraped out large chunks with a wire brush before reinstalling the intake manifold*. I think this mess comes from crankcase gasses through the PCV.

So now I'm considering switching engine oil to a synthetic with an add pack that doesn't release gasses with lots of solids in it. Is there a brand Walmart sells in jugs that's made from a recipe like that?

*I deleted the swirl plates because the shaft was loose.

Can you not install a catch tank to avoid the crud entering the manifold?

I have carbs and completely redirected the crankcase vapor circuit to keep the intakes clean.

Mind you we don't have strict emission controls.

What is the vehicle? And oil catch can/seperator would be a good idea to catch oil vapors and keep them out of the intake. This can be done pretty cheap. I don't really think switching oil is going to make much of a difference.

Maybe look into catch can/separator later. Intake manifold has to be removed in order to gain access to PCV and hose.

Is it hot crankcase gasses mixing with cool intake air that causes the dark crust to form?

Random thoughts:

Routine "Italian Tune-up"

Seafoam!

Distilled Water or methanol cleaning used like seafoam before each oci.

Pennzoil Ultra

Staying on top of pcv service interval

Catch can

Another case of poor planning. I needed to finish the job this weekend and 3 stores near by did not have Motorcraft PCV in stock. Molded hose was not available. So I just cleaned the PCV, black taped the hose and re-used it.

Italian tune-up is a GO!

Picked up next OC today with $5 off Walmart coupon Expires 9/30. "Excedes DEXOS 1 specifications" Valvoline Synpower 5w-20.

Does this engine use EGR? That is the #4 reason I see nasty buildup inside intake manifolds and engine ports.

Unfortunately, bypassing the EGR either requires reprogramming the computer, or putting some block off plate in the EGR system. I hope you don't live where there are smog tests.

BOTH actually, if one does not want a perpetual SES/MIL light on in their instrument cluster.

Almost exactly ky thoughts.....
I would order a good catch can or two (dep on how many vacuum hoses you have running into the intake... when the catch can gets in sea foam the motor change the oil install the catch can (s) and run an italian tune up... 3k or more rpm for 10-15 min aka drive it like you stole it...

3k is not an Italian tune up.
Double that and you are getting close! Haha

3k seems to be doing just fine on vw/audis google fsi italian tune up or vw carbon build up.
