Inner brake wear

Does anybody else notice that inner brake pads and rotor surfaces seem to wear faster than the outsides? Completely anecdotal and based on my memory but after doing my daughter's rear brakes I inspected my F150 front brakes while I was doing the front dif oil. Inner parts were noticably more worn than the outside. This was the case a couple years back when I replaced them as well. This was also the case on the wife's Explorer. Although to be fair I can't clearly remember any brake jobs before that time...

Interestingly, I had the daughter's brakes apart to do rear axle seals a year ago and they were still very freely moving on the brackets adn the pistons pushed back in without excessive force. I also take great care to make sure the pads float freely and teh pins are cleaned and grease when I do a brake job.

I've not noticed that.

Unless you've got sticky calipers, it should be dead even. If you're getting this kind of wear, it's time to check your caliper pins, or pistons, for sticking and either lubricate them properly or replace/rebuild the calipers.
 
Yes My 14 rogue wore the inners completely out while the outers had 5/16 meat. 23k miles.


I blame ASC ABS and brake assist. and WAY undersized pads.

I thought the slides were sticking but the caliper floated with the touch of a feather.


My brother said my nieces honda civic killed the rear disc inner pads at 17K.


Garbage engineering.

Or designed to line dealer pockets.


I see lawsuit territory.

IME you will see a bit more wear on the inner pad with a floating caliper setup... even well serviced/lubed. However you should make a point to insure the caliper pins are clean/lubed (if required), brake hardware is in good condition (no excessive rust behind clips) and pads slide easily when in caliper and bracket prior to reassembly.
 
To be clear, on most of the vehicles it isnt excessive wear, although the daughter's F150 DID burn through the inner pad on one side for some reason...

Yes floating calipers seem to wear the inner pad just slightly more than the outer pad.

Just changed a set on a 2006 Mazda SUV(Ford), and all the inner pads were slightly worn more than the outer pads.
 
The inboard side of the rotor is always the side with the piston, therefore it's the side where the braking pressure is applied. Even with perfectly functioning slide pins, the side getting the pressure will always wear faster. I just did the rear brakes on my Fusion a couple weeks ago, and on both sides, the inboard pad was worn substantially more than the outboard.

On an unrelated note, I looked through the service records on that car.. and it seems the last time the rears were done was 4 years prior.. 4 years on a set of pads and rotors. Pretty darn good.
 
Inner pad wear is due to caliper piston hanging up(could also be a damaged brake hose), outer pad wear is hardware and or binding on the slides.
 
Maybe it can be done on motorcycles and maybe some cars, but a lot use different pads for the inner vs outer.

I believe your explanation of one side getting more pressure than the other resulting in more wear is violating Newtons 3rd Law- equal and opposite reaction...just saying

Exactly- and yet another reason why I much prefer fixed calipers.

The piston applies x force to the inner pad. The opposite force is the combination of force from the outer pad plus whatever it takes to make the pins move. Ergo it's always slightly less force on the outer pad--and often way more if the slider pins no longer slide freely.

I was speaking abstractly(sp?)-i.e. perfect world. We all know there are frictional forces/losses, bending moments, elasticity, etc. that can produce uneven application. Someone had already mentioned dry pins/slides as likely culprit. Agreed.
