Back in the 1950's, almost all cars used a straight 20 weight, until the late 50's when 10W30 multigrades began to be used. If and when an engine began to use oil, we would use straight 30 weight to lessen usage. Never heard of using a straight 40 weight in an automobile engine.

My 1954 Ford V-8, purchased new, had 140,000 miles on it by 1959, all on straight 20 weight.

i have a 1958 Chevy with a 235 6 cyl don't know the miles , now i have about 40 psi oil pressure when cold and when hot ( hot day ) i have seen 10 maybe 5 psi ,, i do have some rattling issues , like when it shifts from low to high i here something going on ,, i changed the oil when i first got it and use i think it was 15w40 fully sync oil and was told not to use that so i changed and started using straight 40 weight ,, that being said what should i use to keep better oil pressure, i am going tom overhaul the engine this winter but i want to drive it till then , i was told that 20w50 would be better ???

We run fleet trucks to very high mileages. Many times at over 100k miles they may begin to consume a bit of oil. We generally then go to a 40w to control that.

I would not want an older engine to be running only 5-10 psi under any kind of load!

update
i drove betsy this evening and things looked good until the temp got to 180 thats were it ran all even, thats ok but now to oil pressure , it started out at 40 psi then it dropped to about 35 while driving at 50 mph by the speedo. then it started dropping it went to about 25 to 30 psi while at 40 to 50 mph and at red lights it went to 10 psi but it came right back up to 25 to 30 psi after i started going again, the good thing i never saw 0 thats good , so its time to have a motor pulling party ,i am going to get a friend or 2 to help me , i might as well pull both right and have the transmission clean and checked out too ,, now i need some pointers on pulling ( were to hook puller ) i am going to get a load lever too they are very helpful
any ideas would be grateful
