In Theory -- How Long Should I Run This Oil?

After my ARX run I plan on using my Amsoil ASL 5W30 (I have 2 gallons of it), and also using an Amsoil EAO20 Oil Filter. The Engine is a B18B1, which is pretty easy on oil, in the owner's manual it states 7500 miles for normal service. My daily commute is 15 miles each way (70% highway, 30% city), and other than that it isn't really driven much. I averaged about 5000 miles a year on my previous car, and i'm assuming this car will see about 7500-10000 a year, tops. If the engine is in tip-top shape, with my brand new PCV valve, brand new Napa Gold air filter, new breather hose, new gaskets, etc., would I be able to run this oil further than the recommended 7500? I understand that i'd need a UOA to verify it, but I was looking for more of a hypothetical answer on it. The car's always been on a 5k/6 month interval with bulk dino, and is spotless under the valve cover (I have pics if anyone wants em)

Is that the full synthetic Amsoil? If so, I think you could run 7500 miles easy; especially if you're doing 70% freeway. Two gallons must've cost you about $160

I hope you are kidding. A gallon of ASL or ATM is $28 retail and $22 PC, preferred customer. I'm not being a prude, because a) you didn't use a smiley face and b) people actually believe your post, because it was "on BiTOG".

Thanks,

Paul

I think he got it confused with the cost of 2 cases, instead of 2 gallons.

I would say give a full one year oil change a go, and do a UOA just to see how it holds up. Be sure to keep a check on your oil every 1,000 miles and make sure you are not letting it get too low.

I was just guessing at the price; consider it an error in judgement on my part. Now the world knows the truth.

Just a little bit more information, here's a picture of the inside of my engine after all 6 month/5k OCI's with dealership dino:

You've got some mild varnish stains that could be cleaned up with Maxlife. Your engine bay has significant corrosion; do you drive on salted roads? What I do with mine is spray the whole engine down with PB Blaster garage door lube (not the penetrating PB Blaster

) and then mop up the excess.

Yep, we have a lot of salt here in Michigan. It's actually not too bad compared to most cars I see

As for the Varnish, i'm wondering if the Amsoil or any other Synthetics would help with a mild cleaning. I'm currently running ARX which might also help a bit. I have 5 quarts of Maxlife but that was going to be used for my sister's new Formula Firebird.

It's entirely possible that other synthetics could clean up that varnish, but my only experience is with the Maxlife removing varnish on my car. The previous owner had used Pennzoil dino at an unknown drain interval and the Maxlife removed the stains in 1500 miles. I can only imagine the cleaning capability of full synthetic Maxlife; it must be awesome.

that is a very clean engine...i have yet to see one picture of a before and after were varnish was removed ...

I know exactly what you mean. It's one of those miraculous things in life that you can't prove to anyone since you're the only one who's seen it.

I'll have to get some pics after the ARX run for you all then

I have to change the bleeder hose anyways (it's starting to crack, as you can see in the pic)

In all reality, shipping costs aside, the Amsoil didn't cost me much more than over-the-counter synthetic at normal price. I ordered several quarts of gear oil at the same time (which Amsoil synthetic gear oil is VERY competitive in price) so the shipping cost was negated.

Most synthetics sold at stores around here sell at about 6$ a quart, which equates to a 4$ difference for me each OCI. That's a bargain knowing that I'm buying a quality oil with mostly Group IV as opposed to whatever cost-cutting solution I'm getting from others.

Would I buy it all the time? Probably not-- Shipping costs add up. But I certainly don't mind adding a gallon jug or two of 5w30 ASL when I'm buying gear oil. UOA's show it to be excellent oil.
