I don’t normally use it, I use Google Voice (because I was an early adopter that got in before they quit offering free texting), and I’m normally on WiFi with cellular data turned off (Tracfones), so I don’t use any data at all.
No, iMessage is far far FAR superior to SMS/MMS. It does not use anymore battery than regular messages, but does use data. I and the rest of my family share tons of videos and photos, last month I used 1Gb of data on messages.

I keep my iMessages turned on, but my read notifications turned off. That way no one will know if I've read their texts or not.
This is what I do. Plus I have unlimited data with Verizon so I don't care how much data I use or don't use.

Agree, iMessage is great. If you have family you want to share conversations, photos, videos, etc., it really is great. I’ve sent some huge videos across iMessage and it’s really nice.
If its not prudent to have imessage because of the cost of a data plan, then I could see the need to turn it off, but it’s still a very nice tool to have when on WiFi and whatnot.

When I first got an iPhone the guy at the phone store told me I had to turn off iMessage in order to receive any messages from users of other types of phones like Android. Since my parents use Android I turned it off. Well then all my iPhone friends are like why are your messages showing up green if you have an iPhone, then I figured it out after reading online. So now it’s back on again for me the read stamp is on too. I always reply right away to a message as soon as I read it.
Plus it’s worth it for things like Game Pigeon and stuff where you can play games over text with all your Apple device people lol. I am unsure about the battery since I’ve gotten another iPhone since that time and the data I’m not worried about as we have unlimited now.

iMessage on and receipt off.
Being "newer" to iPhone (last 2 years as far as personal use), I/we are amazed at the quality of videos when sending in text messages between iPhone users. Its just fantastic.
I dont watch movies or play games on my phone, I do have Apple Music but not used a on daily constant basis. I DO send quite a few photos and videos in text messages for sure. iMessage will not deplete or burn up your battery.

We use our phones quite a bit, never ever have run out of 10gb of my monthly high speed data.

. Thankfully I get few texts, and our cell network is lousy, as as I think I only have 60MB of data per month.
Cell service stinks at my house so having iMessage is a blessing as most everyone I text has an iPhone. If I have to text a non iMessage user there’s a 50/50 chance it goes through if I’m in my house.

There's almost no reason to turn it off. It automatically falls back to SMS/MMS if it needs to as well.
iMessage works over WiFi when you're on it. If you're on data and send a text, if you're sending to another iOS device, yes, it will use data but if it's going to an Android, it uses SMS.
