Even though money is kinda tight with me at college, I think I'm gonna spend the extra $$$ and use Mobil 1. I've seen the UOAs and I think it's worth it to spend a few extra $$ in the long run.

Currently, my Jeep is sitting outside my dorm and I haven't moved it in a week. I have no intention of driving until next Friday, when my father comes in to see me. I have yet to check the oil level but I don't think it's gonna be needing any oil. It's 700 miles til its due for an oil change (mainly highway miles) so when I go back for Thanksgiving, I'm gonna make the switch. I saw some good UOAs on 0w40. I think that's perfect for me because I do highway miles and lots of short trips. I'm currently using Delo. Currently, its about 50 degrees outside. After hearing that test on Delo on cold pumping... I'm all about changing to protect my engine.

Good choice on getting at least a xw-40. You should do well with it. I don't really see any problems with the Delo or Delvac 15w-40 for you though. I've probably already said this ..but if you want a snyth and want to save money ..go with Rotella ..except you'll have to buy two gallons to get your six quarts. You may also consider getting a full size FL1A filter (it should fit) ..or if you have the "right angle" adapter ...the 1773 NAPA (51773 Wix) and bump it to 7 quarts.

Sorry ....I'm a Cold War kid. No project was too big ..no flying formation of gleaming silver strategic bombers was too large ...no ICBM complex was too expensive ....

..call me the "more" generation .....

Do as you like, but I think you are wasting your money.

Put a decent low cost dino 5W-30 such as the Chevron/Texaco dinos in there for the six months of winter (Thanksgiving to Easter) and your 15W-40 for the summer months and you will not be doing anything wrong by your Jeep.

If money is tight, spending it on big $ synthetic oil changes is not, IMO, a great move.

Do your Jeep and your wallet a favor. Go to Wal*Mart and get SuperTech oil for $0.88 a quart and a SuperTech oil filter for $2.07. The whole oil change will cost less than $7.50 (for six quarts).

Do this 3 or 4 times a year and you and your Jeep will be well served.

Although I don't always practice what I preach...the new GF-4 oils and a Walmart filter every 4K miles will serve you just fine.

My Jeep gets 10W30 Chevron/Havoline and a Napa Gold filter all year round and runs like new.
I must admit though, that I do get tempted to join the fun and start switching around. I've been tempted by the HM Chev/Hav, Delo, and lately the Mobil 1 SUV 5W40 stuff has been in my mind.
I hope I resist.....

Another vote for dino if money is tight. Mobil 1 turns in good UOAs, but so do most oils. SuperTech (or whatever is on sale) and a SuperTech filter will serve you well.

I had a son in college and now daughter that I used and use synthetic in and only changed the oil once a year (usually 9-12,000 miles in that year and the UOA and results have been fine. Less hassle for the student, the parents and good protection. Assuming no oil leaks or high consumption this method results in little worry over maintenance, well, oil changes anyway, and I usually did the oil changes over summer breaks or Christmas break.

The 4.0 isn't like a small block chevy in oil flow to the top of the engine. A SBC is like Niagra Falls ...right from start up cold. The 4.0 just looks like it bleeds oil from the pushrods. They keep the main flow where it's needed. As long as you are't tapping away ...you're fine.

You'll be fine with either the x-40 synth or the Delo through out your winter. Heck, I think I'd do both (or either, rather) at 6 month OCIs. The only reason for the 6 month thing is that 1 year would probably be too long ..and we tend not to like to "carry over" our OCIs into the next year (like 9 months would do).

If they had your "winter" climate in Canada ...you'ld see a whole lot of people using Delo year round.

Well, maybe I'll start with Rotella T synthetic... In the cold, the 15W40 isn't gonna pump as well. That makes me think of the start up wear, especially when I start it next week since it would be 2 weeks since it has been started.

I think in terms of money, its about equal. I changed the oil in August and my next big trip will be Thanksgiving break.... putting the oil at the 2700 mile mark. By the time I return to campus, it's due to be changed but I don't have a place to change it. I'm gonna go a UOA on it when I change it. Just to see how it goes.

If I change Delo every 3K... over 6K miles:
1.80*6 = 10.80
FL1A = 2.89
Total(x2)= 27.38

Mobil 1 over 6K (I'll probably go to 7500 miles)
4.79*6 = 28.74
FL1A = 2.89
Total = 31.63

Difference of $4.25. The 0w-40 would give better protection, espcially at start up (unless i'm wrong).....

Other solution... GTX Start-UP

If you're in TX and LA, I don't believe you're going to have to worry about cold start-up issues....

If it were mine, I'd run:
Mobil Delvac 1300
Motorcraft FL-1A

I've got an idea.... when I start it up next week...I'll have someone start it up, and I'll watch the valvetrain through the oil filler cap and see how fast it gets oil.

I got a better idea...now that I am in Louisiana, there are Advance Auto Parts stores! They sell Redline! So what if I used Chevron/Havoline 10w40 and instead of using my usual bottle of Synpower Oil Treatment, I could had half a quart of Redline 10W40! I would get some Group V oil to help with start up and a lot more moly than the Synpower and its about the same price as buying the Synpower.

Take it from someone who changed M1 (with Fram filters!) every 3k through college. Buy Supertech, or score some free Maxlife, and spend the rest on beer. Your truck will last just as long and you'll have better stories.

You're talking to a designated driver, well, a D.D. 97% of the time...haha.

Rotella T Synthetic is a good compromise suggestion. It should have no problem going the 6-7.5k miles you are thinking about.

Of course Delo 15W-40 could go that distance without breaking a sweat either!

John

PS Today I saw two guys pouring Mobil-1 into an obviously beat to death small Japanese pickup truck in front of AutoZone. It looked like the poor truck was either burning or leaking oil and they stopped to top it off. Seemed like a huge waste of money to me!

I'd use the Mobil 0w-40 . It meets GM-LL-A-025 which among other is a two year service spec depending on miles . Twist a new filter on it after a year if you think all is going well .

I saw an analysis of a short tripper using this oil at 18 months . Crazy good oil for the price
