I'm Quiting the Site/Misinformation...

Take 'er easy Jelly, take the occasional bitog sabbatical, and come back refreshed. Keep in mind other people will have other opinions. Let it be an exercise to the reader to find out what to make of dozens of conflicting opinions from all sorts of posters.

1. "How do you do it?"
Often at the expense of personal life, and often --before learning how this board affected me (--i m a newbie) at the significant expense of productivity.

2. Regarding gripes:

I think a majority of the useful information every to come out of the board can already be found in the archives. Right now, most discussion will be a repeat of previous discussion, and a lot of chatter. Lately, mostly chatter IMO. It would be great if it were possible to compile the early years of bitog into bitog-classic searchable archive and keep it separate from the new stuff; something like 3/4 (i am using my guesstimates here) of the total information ever would be contained in these few years posts, while the new posts covering a mere potential 1/4 of the total useful information would be swamped in a sea of chatter of a new bitog era.

There is still much to be learned through the slow process of UOA's and the statistics on can make from them; there will for sure be interesting years ahead, but it will be slow progress that isn't noticable at all from day to day. Therefore the need for chatter.

And chatter isn't all bad either; we can keep each other enthusiastic about our little hobby, keep each other from worrying ourselves sick of imaginable potential oil disasters in your engine, have entertaining arguments of conflicting views, etc, share tips, and all the other neat stuff that happens here.

Sure, we can do better, and it's useful that Jelly brought this up. Only through self reflection can one improve.

Better yet, only through self-denial can one improve.

Well, now that I've done some thinking...

Basically, I think I just needed to vent a little...I'm having to deal with my fair share of problems right now, and coming to BiTOG was always kind of a "release" for me. Now that BiTOG has gone a little awry though, I guess it was akin to someone sticking a needle in my ballon...POP!

I hope my first post didn't come off wrong though. I really do love this site, but I figure I'm just gettin' a little burnt out on posting several messages a day, and giving good thought to each, only to be ignored or something when I could be doing something a little more productive or peaceful, such as schoolwork or reading a book, be it dealing with engines or oil!

Like robo mentioned, I'll take my own little BiTOG sabbatical and chill out for awhile. I'll go check out another lube book from the library that I've been wanting to read and spend the time I usually spend on here reading the book instead.

This is probably gonna sound weird - I do have one request...on this board, there are several people that have a great deal of knowledge in regards to synthetic oils, but if someone has a question (etc, etc...) regarding HDEO 5w-30/5w-40/15w-40's, and no one is giving them the information/suggestions they need, could you please tell them to PM me. I really enjoy being able to communicate with someone one-on-one and write out a nice reply that fully explains my suggestions and why I choose such an oil, or just simply giving a nice good answer to a question.

Told ya' it would sound weird! Seriously though, I kinda like being the resident, as 97TBird says, "HDEO guru", and I figure even during my "sabbatical", I'll get on here ever other day or so and see what's going on.

Take care guys, keep it between the lines, and after my little break, I look forward to coming back, and now that I have a paying job, becoming a monetary supporting member of the site and continue on learning more about the latest and greatest in the world of lubes and filters!

Take care,

Justin.

P.S. - Thanks to each and every one of you that took the time to write a nice reply...this is definitely the best message board I've been on (hey, no one can be perfect), and without a doubt, it's because of the people that are here and the ones I enjoy sharing my, ahem, "passion" with.

P.P.S. - I just have to reply to a few posts and make one of my own...have to get my "fix" before I go!

I can't quite this site. Oh, I am addicted to it for sure. But this truly is the best web site I have ever found on the internet for discussion about motor oils, oil filters, etc. On my days off I usually check out this web site at least once a day. Even on my work days I will usually at least take a quick check to see what is going on at the site.

There are very talented people at this site like Terry, Molekule, etc., whose knowledge about motor oils, oil supplements, etc., is invaluable and you simply will not find such talent at very many other web sites that I am aware of that have motor oil information.

There is advertising at this web site. I have tried Auto-RX myself and it seemed to stop a seal leak that a special oil additive and Valvoline MaxLife were unable to stop. I have been impressed with products like Penetro 90. But if you want you can just ignore the advertising. You don't have to buy products like Auto-RX or anything else if you don't want to. Personally, I have nothing against Amsoil and in fact I have bought Amsoil products, but their mass advertising on the internet turns me off.

If the advertising at the site turns you off just ignore it. Use this site to aid you in making good choices about what motor oil to use, etc. There is a lot of good information here in many different areas. I switched to Chevron oil some time after I discovered this web site. I based that decision on various discussions at this web site and the VOAs and the UOAs that I had seen. Maybe my decision to change to Chevron really made little difference. But for the moment let us assume that Chevron is much better then many other conventional motor oils. It also costs LESS then some conventional motor oils. So, assuming once again that Chevron truly is superior, a person using advice at this web site could start using a better motor oil for LESS money. Now I want to explain that recently I have started to use Mobil 1, but when I first discovered this web site I decided to switch to Chevron.

If you leave that is up to you. But some people who leave later decide to come back. There are a lot of interesting discussions here, a lot of give and take, and some truly outstanding advice. You just have to separate what is good from the bad.

Sorry to see you go Jelly, your knowledge of fleet oils is helpful on here.

As far as how we find the time to post? For me, it's mostly from work, as I get a lot of free time when we get in our slow cycle (every month has one crazy week, one semi busy week, then two relatively slow ones) At home, I post early in the morning before everyone gets up, and I go on for about 45min or so while my wife is giving my son a bath and getting him settled down for bed (they watch TV together and if I'm in the room with him he just wants to goof around with me and he gets too hyper before bed)

Jelly,

From another Kentuckian,

Everyone gets frustrated from time to time but you can't let it get to you. You post, and then let 'er fly. Rmember, "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink."

I get frustrated with people when they don't look around and do searches. It's like some of them come on here with a specific question, want a quickie answer, and then fly the coop.

But that's the Internet, dude.

Jelly, burn out happens. After you spend time to educate yourself on this subject you begin to form your own opinions as to what is good and best pertaining to oil. You can try to educate people as to what is best for there vehicle. Most really dont care some will listen. Here you are spreading free quality advice about the best oils and filters for any vehicle. Tell people why they should use x instead of y. They look at you like you speak a foreign language. Then one day you will run into a guy who doesnt change his oil at regular intervals. His oil will be black as tar, super dirty air filter, never changes a fuel filter till it clogs and uses fram oil filters cause thats all that wal mart sells. He wont buy a super tech oil filter because its just a "cheap" filter that is not as good as a fram. He only buys oil that is cheap. The big jugs of house brand oil that make you say "no, no, no, buy this one or that one. he says oil is oil". He will only grease his rod ends only when he replaces them. You will be enthralled with this uneducated person. Your chance to save him and show him what he has been doing wrong for the last 50 years. Then you see his old truck has 150,000 miles on it. It leaks some oil but it doesnt burn any oil. Ya go with him to do work on the farm. He fires up the engine. Hits the gas a few times and says "that 390 rocks the old rustbucket dont it". He tows around a trailer with 10,000 pounds of hay on it, up hills and through creeks. He has to feed the cattle often so he does this a few times a week. Ya fix fences, cut branches off trees, haul fuel to tractors. You are always doing something but this guy has EVERTHING he needs in the truck. Im talking saws, barb wire, hammers, a big diesel fuel tank all kinds of stuff that adds up weight. Then you help take a load of cattle to the sale barn. He is driving down the highway varing speed from 60 to 80 and doesnt really seem to pay attention to how he drives. The day is over and you wonder how you made it and how he does it. You figure that with all your knowledge of oil, this guy should have had blown this engine by now. Ya find that he has had a few trucks over the years but never nothing new and he always ran them till they fell apart but the engines were still good. Then you wonder about if you are just throwing your money away on "good" oil and filters. Not to mention how often you change your oil compared to this guy. Then you begin to think its time to look up other stuff on the net. Sure you will still keep up your vehicles like you want but when that 3000 mile or whatever mark hits and you dont really feel like changing oil you will think about that guy and say i can change it later.

Wow. Didn't notice that you had 903 posts. You've done a fair bit yourself. How do you do it? It kind of just happens. I don't know why I have the number that I do. I do agree with your confusion theory, it can be sensory overload here. I mean, once you think you got it all figured out.....something new comes along and you have to re-think you oil choice. SEE???? That is why we are all here. We can't get enough information in our cortex. We are human, we crave knowledge and inputs so that we can make the best decisions. I tell some of my friends at work about this site and the look at me like I lost my mind. BUT, when they talk about engine oil, I'm all over it. You would be surprized by the old wives tales that are still believed here in backwood @ss Oklahoma.
Plus, this site also keeps you on TOP of all the changes so that you don't have to take no baloney from some young punk @ss kid at the auto store to tell you WHAT type of oil you need. Nor, will you have to believe anything your dealer says about all things oil. Have you not gone out and bought oil because you've learned that the price was going up.....case in point...M1 at Walmart when it was 18 or 19 something for 5 quarts, and then overnight it jumped to 22 or 23 something, US wide. This site has probably SAVED YOU MONEY too!!!!! All of that and plus it's FREE. Unless you want to donate to the cause.
No matter what other subject only site you go to, you'll get burned out too. If you join a chat room, well....you know how that works.
OK, I'm done.....May Peace be with you my brother!
