We were discussing Yugo's before church today when a 16 year old who was with us in the car conversation said "What's a Yugo?" We explained to him that a few Caddy dealers would give you a free Yugo if you bought a Caddy. And that it had a 110mph speedo with only 58HP. And that 1st gear felt like second gear and so on....

I thought to myself, I MUST be getting old. How can anyone NOT know about the laughing stock of the auto industry?

Time doesn't stand still, it marches on.

A year or so ago I heard they were setting up to make a comeback.

It is hard to realize that what each of us takes for granted as a universal frame of reference is actually anything BUT universal. There is some college that each year publishes what that year's entering class has never known. Those lists are truly amazing to anyone who is over about 30.

Man I remember I was in Preschool back in 1987 and My dad bought a brand new Chevette.. there were ballons inside and everything I was happy and excited.

I worked with a guy back in the early 90's that had a Yugo, he used it for field service running from hospital to hospital. It was like the energizer bunny but the politics of Europe ruined what could have been a really good car.

The Yugo was first brought to the USA by an enterprising fellow named Malcolm Bricklin, who is perhaps better known for the Bricklin car in the early 1970s.

Bricklin also started Subaru of America, bringing over the original Subaru 360 cc car in the late 1960s.

Today, it seems the cheapest cars are from Korea, though the Daewoo is no longer imported. I think it is now owned by GM.

I am rather amused by the Hyundai-KIA car names, with the vowel on the end. Among my automotive interested friends, we have a couple of jokes about the KIA. We say "KIA" stands for "killed in accident", and the cheapest car available in the USA is the KIA Tincanna, a 1.1 liter sports coupe.

I remember, when I worked for the State of New Jersey, our office was assigned a Chevette Scooter . On New Jersey highways, that thing was a death trap.
