Honestly, it's worth a look at the back of the bottle to see if the MaxLife 10w-40 meets the appropriate diesel spec for the old diesel. It wouldn't be appropriate for a newer diesel, but it might be CF.
If MaxLife 10w40 is CF rated, it may be OK in an '87 F250 diesel. Early 6.9 and 7.3's were IDI engines, and CF covers those types of engines built until 1995, when CG4 took over. As a matter of fact, CC was the API diesel spec that was in effect in 1987, so CF is better than what the engine required when new.
