Canada man jumps on polar bear to defend wife from attack.

Kudos to this husband for fulfilling his duties and responsibilities as a man. Glad to read his wife lived, as did he.

No way to know the outcome had his neighbor not assisted firing later to be lethal shots into the polar bear.

Black bears and brown bears will only attack humans defensively. Polar bears will hunt humans as prey.
When you watch those video's of people in the far Northern communities, everyone walking around has a rifle always. I read some article not long ago that polar bears wondering into the communities had become an issue - lack of prey or something?

My Son and I got chased by a bull a few weeks ago and I shouted, screamed and waved my arms at it and it left. Basically the same thing.

More often there's not enough sea ice for them to hunt off of now, so they are on land more.

My dad had a friend who used to go hunting in Canada and Alaska. He wore a monster size pistol all the time he was there even though he hunted with a rifle. The reason one wears a huge pistol in that kind of country is that you don't have your rifle within easy reach 100 % of the time, and a bear might attack when your rifle is not close enough.

He was using the outhouse at a cabin and a big buck deer came by. He did not have his rifle and decided to take the deer with his pistol. He held the pistol with two hands but had his left hand infront of the front of the chamber. He got the deer, but burned his hand very bad from the escaping gas between the back of the barrel and the front of the cylinder. In a way he was lucky he did not loose fingers or that hand. Some pistols leak enough to do that much damage. I don't know if he had gloves on or not.

No, not really. Not the same thing at all. The bull was intimidating you, trying to run you off his territory. He was protecting his herd, and didn’t need to kill you to do it, though he might enter you in the process either with his horns or by stepping on you. His intent is to chase you off.

Polar bears aren’t protecting a herd, they’re looking for food, and you are prey.

Polar bear comes after you, his goal is to kill you, rip you apart and eat you.

Very different than a bull.

My comment was somewhat sarcastic. I have no intention of ever being anywhere near a bear. The further away they are from me the better :ROFLMAO:

The only thing a pistol is good for is shooting yourself if a polar bear gets hold of you.
Black bears, generally they're just oversized raccoons.
A black bear killed a man and was starting to eat him when it was killed by a neighbor near here this past summer. It was unprovoked and a bear autopsy showed the bear was healthy.

I am near fearless with regard to mechanical things. I understand them well. But when it comes to animals, I want nothing to do with predators and powerful animals of any size. As funny as it sounds, I was twice attacked by giraffe, lucky to be alive. No way I want to be put in a position where Polar Bears can attack me.

Brown bears have been known to prey on humans. Even black bears have instances of predation, though rare. There was an instance in Arizona a few years ago where a large male black bear attacked and ate a guy.

If it’s any kind of bear, it deserves respect.

Brown bears will stalk you for food, just happened recently to a Canadian couple out in Alberta IIRC.

The somewhat brown coloured bears you sometimes see in Canada are actually black bears. For the most part black bears leave humans alone except if you threaten their cubs in some way (like getting between a sow and her cubs). But they sometimes exhibit predatory behaviour, stalking a walker or a camp site for example.

Although people used to be afraid of grizzly bears and more casual with black bears, there is apparently little difference in danger between our grizzly bears and black bears.

One of my patients was attacked in his tent by a black bear which bit a large piece off the top of his scalp. He escaped by running into the nearby lake with the bear in pursuit. He swam out into the lake and the bear eventually gave up. Repairing the defect in his scalp (I wasn't there) left his face a bit stretched.

Looks like you run pretty good for an old guy Cujet! :ROFLMAO: Or did it just punt you?

That's me with the beard, Jane Goodall 2nd from left. That was the Africa trip where I was chased by giraffe at Momela Wildlife Lodge. The stupid thing went crazy chasing me, I took off and ran nearly trampling a wild dog, running around and around my bungalow. Finally going inside. The giraffe ran around and around looking to see where I went. He was determined to get me.

AND, I was so stupid, I went outside again to the other side of the lodge, where it happened again. To say I was terrified was an understatement.

The giraffe eat the acacia trees right behind the bungalow's.

I then hired an armed guide to take me around and a wild buffalo came after us. That was it for me. No more animals.

Here is what they look like, right before they attack:

I once heard that polar bears are always laying-in fat, ergo, they'll always attack you.
I repeat, I HEARD that. I don't want to give them a bad rap.

A fellow I worked with told a story about zooming down a New Jersey road on his bicycle.
He inadvertently rode between a momma bear and her cub and momma bear took off after him.
He said being up to speed in the first place was the only reason he got away.
Bear are fast. You can't outrun a bear.
...now that giraffe...never thought of them being mean or aggressive.
