If the World only had 4 Motor Oils....

PENNZOIL SM 5w30 CCS Viscosity @ -25°C, cP (ASTM D-2602)=5,900
In this temperature region, dinos generally double in viscosity for every 5°C drop in temperature.
5900/2=2950 Close, but nothing definitive unless both are measured at the same temperature.

427Z06 - I dislike seeming like I'm hijacking a good thread. I simply was stating why I personally like the oil.

My reckoning is the 15w40 will be about 5500@-25°C but let's assume it's 6000.

10W-40 Pennzoil is 6090@-25°C other 10W-40's are 7000@-25°C and some 10w30's are 6100+@-25°C

I'm sure there are some dino 5W's that flow better in cold, but the fact remains the Amsoil 15w40 works well in the winter compared to dino 15w40's.

I'd like to see how one makes that determination. Pour Point only?

GoldenRod,
Your previous post about Ford and Honda requirements: Actually, its met by using 0w-20 (you can use that instead of 5w-20). However, in Europe, for those same Ford/Honda cars, they specify 5w30, so you could use 0w-20 in the winter and safely use a 5w30 in the summer, and look no further than the two M1 products, 0w-20 and M1 EP 5w30. By the way, the M1 EP 5w30 is for diesels, too.

OriginHacker,

I think Andy is right; that GC is pretty robust stuff. I'm not sure about start up temp, but at operating temp, GC is thicker than 5w30. As far as Amsoil 0W-30, I think GC is thicker at operating temp than Amsoil. I'm just guessing though because I haven't checked the charts.

Choosing between Amsoil 0w30 and GC 0W-30, is a tough one. I haven't heard a lot comparisons between the two; at least not lately.

Vad where are you at? Why haven't you jumped on this thread?

GoldenRod,

Isn't a 0w30 thinner at startup than a 5w30? Thats why I choose 0w-30s as my primary oils for all cars. Works in the summer and coldest winters. As for Amsoil vs GC - I'd probably choose Amsoil 0w30 then an Amsoil 5w-40 for #2.

I think this thread has gone as far as it will go; actually I'm surprised it went as far as it did. If you're reading this, don't bother posting, because I officially declare it dead.

Can't we agree on anything! LOL I'll just stay simple, uncomplicated (& ignorantly blissful) and continue doing Mobile 1 stuff.

I'm going to nominate Shell Rotella T Synthetic 0W40.
Should work in dang near anything, but we'll have to do a lot of driving to Canada to get it.
