Idiot in an suv on the way to work this morning...

I was once equipped with a horrible Uhaul box truck, with dolley and a car I couldn't see in my mirrors on a straightaway.

On an interstate at night in the rain in the right lane, I was getting seriously tailgated. Even slowing to 45 mph couldn't shake this bozo off. They say if you suspect an OUI on your 6 o'clock, you should make a 90 degree turn to shake them loose. Simply stopping will bring them through your bumper!

Around here, you'll get tailgated in the left lane even going 10mph over the speed limit.

I wasn't going to say it, but since the title of this thread mentions SUVs, that its usually the SUVs doing the tailgating.

It's also usually the SUVs diving for the shoulder when traffic comes to a stop.

Here's a hint..if the brakes in your ride suck, leave plenty of room between you and the vehicle in front.

Isn't that somewhat of a non-statement?... aren't most vehicles on the road SUVs?

Or some odd variation thereof? Maybe. I'm sure they are in some parts. I think the point is that they tailgate more than their share.

Your local nuWINGland dialect. It's funny how the butchering of the King's English changes as you move from Maine to ..hmmm..even north Jersey. I think RoDIALan is about the most pronounce in saying something like bEEah...it winds it's way down through CN ..might bypass NYC ..but picks up some left overs in north jer(aiah)sey (muted "aiah"). Maine can almost be southern. Y'all is common and the traditional nuWingland "ah" for "r" can be transformed to "ar" as in tar. Lobstar instead of lob-stuh or lob-stah.

Only if you live on the South Shoa.

"Mental cruise control". I like that. SO many people are like that. I call it the pack mentality, or an Illinois cluster****.

Next time you're on an interstate highway with moderate to light traffic, just watch. There will be a "pack" of around 5 to 20 cars, all in a tight group going around the same speed. Then there will be an almost empty gap for 1/4 to 1/2 mile. Then another group of cars doing the same. I always ride in the empty gap. It has to be some sort of psychological thing, because I see it happen over and over again, in numerous Midwest states.

Yes. People like to run in packs. On something like the Maryland turnpike you'll get multiple packs traveling at different speeds. If density permits, you'll watch them interweave to keep pace with each other. It's sorta like some flying formation since they appear to keep the same frame of reference spanning multiple lanes. It's a pain on some of the older 4 lanes. I'd just drive up to 4 cars sitting in a pack blocking both lanes. Getting in close enough proximity appeared to wake up one of the left lane day dreamers and they either slowed or sped up to allow fitting through them.

You're 100% right. I-55 here in northern Illinois is particularly bad; drivers will ride together in clusters from about Weber Road through Joliet until about Dwight or so when by then some will have exited, or sped up, or whatever. Its uncanny; it seems every time I go that way I'm in the middle of one of these clusters with clear areas visible and behind.
