With the rise in identity theft and the increasing ability for someone to sign up with a credit card with your name. I understand checking your credit rating is a good thing to do. It could tell if someone is using your identity and has unpaid accounts in your name. I also understand that if you use the wrong service it could actually lead to identity theft. What is the best service or way to proceed??

Wait until the end of this year, when you'll be able to get free credit reports from the major reporting agencies once a year.
Free credit reports will be available on the east coast 9/1/05.
The new free ones (moving west slowly) are the real thing...
The old web "free" ones were sorta hidden catches....

Safest way is to request directly from Trans Union, Experian and Equifax directly.
