When it comes to watching movies across usb... there are alot of variables. YMMV.

If you can go firewire, thats a good option. IMHO

Ya know what... get a big, fast sata put it in an enclosure, keep your machine tuned up and let it rip. I bet you will be fine and happy.

usb will go 30+ MB a second plenty for movies.

I'd go for an external usb/esata.. and when he gets a new computer he can use it with esata on new computer.
