According to the Specifications the RS520 has "Front and Rear Accessible i.LINK (IEEE 1394)Interfaces" (i.LINK is Sony's name for Firewire).
 
Ya know what... get a big, fast sata put it in an enclosure, keep your machine tuned up and let it rip. I bet you will be fine and happy.
 
usb will go 30+ MB a second plenty for movies.

I'd go for an external usb/esata.. and when he gets a new computer he can use it with esata on new computer.
