We don't have enough info, like others mentioned, was the oil level monitored, how strict were the intervals, how sure are we that OCI's were not stretched even more?

These are the things we should be asking instead of blaming quick lubes and speculating on bulk oil quality, which by the way, is used by thousands of dealers, taxi and other fleet operators and our beloved quick lubes, but no, bulk oil is bad

In my experience not true, disagree, been into different engines in the past making repairs etc(LIM) some on dino some on synthetic and the synthetic engines were always noticeably cleaner and these were mostly 3,000-5,000 mile OCI cars.

honda oci's are 7500 mi. for my sons '97 accord, i don't know the specs for the op engine i thought 7500 mi. was the norm for honda.
a good quality oil should have no problem going 7500 mi. in a engine speced for 7500 mi intervals dino or syn.

i would look for other issues; leaking oil and or antifreeze in the oil. has it ever been over-heated or run below the add mark?

ditto. Honda is very good at building engines. They wouldn't lead you astray when it comes to oil. They've been specing longer than 5K intervals long before SM came out.

There is no oil monitor on a 2005 Element I think they got them in 06 or 07.

1/2 the oilchanges were done at the Honda dealer which is probably bulk Mobil 5000. The other times was done at a garage in the small town they live in. The oil filter on it was a Car Quest one which I think is made by wix. I was suprised the air filter was very clean I dont know what type it was but it was BEEFY and very nicely made. Much nicer than the Fram I put in there.

Most of the miles are highway since she has to drive 50 miles to work each day ONE WAY.

Will see how well the synthetic cleans it at 5k OCI. I justpect going over 5k is just too much for dino but that is just my 2 cents from what I am seeing here.

ps. The Element calls for 10k OCI with 5w20 and it doesnt say it has to be syn but no way I would run dino to 10k.

Agree with Panzerman, oil is cheap.

I agree with you, Johnny. It's also not so much if the oil is still good, but more to do with the dirt and contaminants floating around in the oil. I like to keep that kind of stuff out of my engine.

5k miles is certainly doable on any decent dino oil. 7.5k miles is doable, but probably not as widely considered for good reason. My Fusion is 7.5k mile recommended, and seems very plausible via UOA. That 7.5K miles cannot be said as a blanket statement for all situations, obviously. 5k miles probably can be.

I agree with the comments on bulk oil vs bottled oil. I have faith in the major brands available off the shelf. The bulk drum oils might be more suspect, especially from questionable sources like quikie lubes. Even Mobil Clean 5000 claims more detergents as compared to their own bulk oil, so part of the answer my lay there ...
"With Mobil Clean 5000, you’ll get 16 percent more cleaning agents than our conventional oil, Mobil Clean (available in installed facilities only). "
I suspect all the major brands make oils for bulk installation, and then they make bottled stuff for us AR DIY types.

There are two ways that oil oxidation and sluding take place in an engine. One is inferior engine design; the other inferior oil. I suspect with your relative's Honda, it's the oil at fault.

Do a good cleaning cycle with ARX (perhaps two cycles!) and the engine will clean up nicely, in a slow, methodical way. Then use a quality dino and it will stay that way, likely for even 7.5k mile OCIs.

From what I've seen on here, even stout conventional oils like PYB seem to have a hard time with 5k+ mile OCI's without some serious shearing.

The 7500 mile is not a blanket statement, it is a recommended OCI for my 97 accord, I also put on a lot of highway miles as the OP. I would have zero problems running a dino out to 10K if that's what the OEM specs for this engine, Honda did a whole bunch of research to come to this conclusion, at least I would run 9k. I understand it does not have a oil life monitor, does it have a maintenance minder that goes off beside the odometer ? That's what my 97 has, and I do use it to keep track of oil changes... however I also log the mileage etc so I keep up with it two ways ... uhoh I'm one of those oil nerdo's

It's your car, and your choice, however it's a shame to cut the OCI way down, I can see for a short time for cleaning if you think bulk oil has caused this problem, however from my driving, and what I have seen 7500 miles is no problem in my car doing around 50 mile trips to work, and it's each way as well 47 miles to be exact each way. I run dino out to 7500 miles, and change the filter every other time, I run synthetic out to around 13k... I was trying to push it to 15k however I actually trust the two 7500 mile dino changes more than the extended synthetic OCI !!

Isn't the filter doing that though?

Then the oil wouldn't turn black.

John

Black isn't the color of excessive-wear causing contaminants. A color, caused by a chemical reaction, can't be filtered out. A color can, however, be due to fuel dilution or clean up, which could deplete additives, cause the oil to shear or lower its flashpoint. The only way to tell is by sending out for analysis.
