I want to try a "designer" oil.

I have been using Mobil 1 0w40 for almost the entire life of the car, save for three oil changes with GC, but at almost eight dollars a quart, I might as well get something crazy.

Which should I get, Red Line or Amsoil?

Personally, I like Red Line better.
 
Personally if I was going to spend some $$ for oil, there is no question I'd go with AMSOIL Signature Series 0w30.

I'd get it from one of the board sponsors.

But this is from someone who has had many engines still going with 200k+, 300k+ and close to 400k on whatever oil was on sale.

Will it still be 11 dollars a quart?

I don't know if I could take full advantage of SSO. I change my oil every 7500 miles as per the reminder light (7500 miles, 750 hours or 12 months, which ever comes first) and don't really feel safe going longer than that. Even though I drive 200 miles a day on the highway total with some stop and go when I get into the city.

I had a supplier for Motul a couple of years ago and did run it in my SAAB 900S. However, that engine was a pile of garbage so I just wasted oil on it.
 
I would go with Redline Carquest can order it in for you if they do not already have it on the shelf. Did you know that Redline makes a 0W40,5W40 and 15W40???? If you did not want to run the classic Redline 5W30 you could easily get 0W40 or 5W40. Do not be suprised if the first 1000 mmiles you burn 1/4 of a quart or so. When ever I go from running dino or OTC mixed up blended synthetics to running any high ester content oil from Redline,VP Racing or NEO I always burn a 1/4. Once I top it off it does not do it again.

I wonder if I can get it cheaper since I work at a dealer and we have a contract with Car Quest? That would be wicked.

I wanted to give the Redline 0w30 a try because it is ACEA A5/B5 rated, which is awesome.

It's $8.10 a quart before taxes or shipping.

I'd never run something 15k or or even spend that much for oil, but if you want a "designer" oil, I doubt you'd do any better than SSO.

But with 200 miles of hwy operation I'd run SSO (with a filter change @ 7,500 miles) 15k in your engine.

Past that I'd pass.

Again, JMO....

Then why consider any "designer" oil?

Personally - if you have only been using M1 and GC, how can you like Red Line better than Amsoil and say you don't want to pay $8 quart?

My opinion? Stick with M1. There are no "designer" oils....well I guess there are but they would be REAAAAAALLY expensive.
 
For less than $5.00/qt, you can get either GC or Mobil 1 0W-40 on sale or with MIR.
Either oil is very good.
I like GC myself.
Redline seems like a very solid choice, and Amsoil products do show great UOA numbers on long drains.
If you don't contemplate really long drains and you don't track your cars, I think either the GC or the Mobil 1 would work well for you.
Still, the urge to try something else is something I can understand.
If you must scratch the itch, why not?
