Hi, and THANK YOU for all the great help! the local garage stripped the threads in the oil pan doing an oil change. My friend, who can use the money, is ordering an oil pan and will replace it. he is a certified mechanic, and I will now use him for my cars.

he never charges me enough money. any idea what I would pay him for a new oil pan, Mobil 1 and new filter? I live in Massachusetts.

Call a couple local garages and see what they charge for that service. Consider the possible warranty or lack there of, should there be an issue.

In my mind, as a business person myself, I would sit him down and help him figure out an hourly rate, identify the cost involved in owning a business etc.

Some guys might not be ready for that kind of talk, so give him 75 to 80% of what the garage would charge, you get a deal he gets more than he figured. You both win and he will be more willing to do warranty work because he was paid decently.

Figure his time is worth at least $65/hr. That is wht decent indys in NJ charge minimum.

The part cost can be figured out by calling the dealer. They will give you retail, he may get wholesale, but that delta would be part of his shop's profit structure, so if trying to do really right, give him retail. At least then if he says no you can gie him the amount to pay for it at cost.

It's probally a two piece design. The upper is probally aluminum bolted to the block and the lower steel bolted to the upper.

Consider drilling and tapping the hole to a slightly larger size, and using a larger bolt.This can't always be done, but sometimes can. Also, there are oversized drain bolt available for this exact need - just screw them in and they kind of cut their own threads.
Pick up a suitable drain bolt at the local auto parts store [and a spare].

Is the oil change shop paying? Still, it may be wise to go the easy way, because problems can occur with a semi-major job. Pocket the difference.

Simple question. If a garage stripped the drain plug, why are they not spending their money replacing the pan?
