That being said, go drive an LR4 and see if you like it and want one. Simple 'nuff.

Oh I did and I love the way it drives.
BUT - I just know too many problems with their RR Sport (same gen), issues there are bizarre like you need to disassemble the body and lift the frame up to change some $10 gasket

So just wondered if their LR4 has issues as well, and as you see there are many

Well, yeah, it's a Land Rover (American model). It's going to be a POS, but if you have money and like the vehicle, rock it! Also, you might get lucky and yours will be fine. There's always that.

I have an RR, but I wholly agree on the Land Cruiser. In '17 before I bought our latest RR, I cross shopped the Land Cruiser and the G Wagen. The Toyota is a great truck, but a bit bland, especially the interior. The G Wagen was a bit too much the other way and I wanted a diesel. Both will be on the list again in two years or so when the time to trade in the RR nears.

To all those championing the Land Cruiser, a quick check of my local market shows a 2012 LR4 with 85k miles in what looks like mint condition for 16.5k. Same year and mileage Land Cruiser is averages double the price. I prefer the LC but not at twice the price. That extra 16k would pay for a lot of LR4 repairs.

Let's assume a Land Cruiser will go 2x-3x the mileage as 2strokeNorthstar claims. It probably can. But so what? Do you really need to drive 400,000 miles in a gas guzzling SUV? Its neat to see the older Land Cruisers come up for sale with 350-500k miles but they only sell for 3-4k. Everything inside and out is worn down. Who cares if it still runs at that point? You still pay for fuel, insurance, all that. Most people just put 10-15k a year on a vehicle. So if they start with a half priced LR4 that is under 100k and it only lasts till 200,001 miles it wont be a big loss. I've seen plenty of Suburbans driven highway that come up for sale around 400,000 miles too. Doesn't mean a suburban is the greatest thing ever.

So if your that guy who must drive a real 4x4 SUV 30k+ a year or plans to drive to south america and back the Land Cruiser is unbeatable.

Well said dareo...given that the OP wants and likes the LR4 specifically, and a Land Cruiser isn't cheap to own either, I don't think the ability to maybe go to 500k+ (with work and maintenance) matters that much. I think this is a case where buying what you really want makes more sense than buying the statistically most reliable vehicle in the category.

2016 Lr4 SCV6 - no issues at all - always liked the way they looked - finally drove one. Blew me away - not off road much but it works great in the mud even with all season tires - with mud grips aired out it would terrific -

I am aware of the plastic crossovers for the cooling system but am ok with it.

Did drive the Land Cruiser and is was sort of ok - ride was not even close to the LR - Im sure they are capable though.

Seriously though - if you want 100% reliability - just get a old car with zero electronics and a carb.

I mean, when it comes time to sell, you will be in the same boat. The LC will have retained a ridiculous value and the LR will not.

The GX460 is more reasonable, although the prices have skyrocketed in the last year. I bought mine in Feb 2020 for $20500 before tax. 2011 with 72k miles. I suspect I would be paying 27-30k for one now.

I agree with this argument most of the time when you are comparing some normal vehicle to a Toyota. For example, an F150 to a Tundra. I've used it myself a lot lately because driving 500k miles is pointless to me. I suspect some time in the 50 years it takes me to get to 500k I will need to switch vehicles for some reason or another and it will all have been for nothing.

The problem is, from the sounds of things, its not like you will just be able to drive the LR4 to 200,000 miles and do nothing to it. It will be in need of repair throughout that time. I suspect the LC will make it to 200k and beyond with just some regular maintenance. Although the UR motor is not completely free of issues, its generally ok.

I've been there, done that. I had a Jeep Liberty CRD and it sucked. It was constantly needing some kind of attention. I would only recommend buying one if you hate yourself and are a masochist.

Lexus GX460 is basically an LR4 without all the headaches.
they drive very different. other than both ripping off the mitsubishi montero layout it’s apples to oranges

if somebody is set on the buying the lr4, they should probably get a lr3 v8. same truck less problems much better engine

GX460 is just a pimped out 4Runner... which is not saying much - but they are reliable rides.

I sort of agree about the LR3 V8 choice. A lot of truck for the money - All issues known - a little more basic -

LR3 here, 07 with the 4.4 V8. Over 200k miles, doesn't burn or leak a drop of oil. Drives like new still, have gone through a few sets of lower control arms up front (last time got RRS ones). Wouldn't trade it for anything, it's a tank in the snow and on cross country trips. One of my favorite vehicles of all time. Anyone that hates on them probably can't afford one! It is in a class of its own. No other vehicle is so versatile and practical yet has such timeless styling.

So you actually own one and are commenting from experience? How dare you:D

It is interesting how many of the negative comments are from folks who haven't owned recent LR/RR's. Yes the older ones have a well deserved reputation, recent ones, as in the last 15 years or so, are pretty good. I had three from new since 2011. Mine were painless, except for DEF issues on the diesel one, but those are not exclusive to the brand.
