would a thinner power steering fluid quiet the pump? its not overly loud or anything, it could just be a bit more quiet.
i was thinking about using amsoil atf.

i have 55,000 miles on it, am i safe to flush the power steering system at that mileage? i already replaced the (probably) factory fill with some valvoline atf(about 3/4 of a quart) 3,000 miles ago using the turkey baster method. the factory fluid was dark red, only slightly dirty. i will probably do the turkey baster thing this time too.

i don't want to run the amsoil if it could free up dirt, send it into the p/s pump and ruin it. i have had this nightmare before on a different vehicle.

the application is a 2001 mustang bullitt 4.6 with hydro boost

As for freeing up dirt and stuff there are threads about the Magnefine filters and also Napa Gold Fuel Filters people have placed on the low pressure return lines and that has cut down on particle counts.

You are safe to flush the fluid with that mileage. Turkey baster method is safe but takes time.

I doubt that your other pump was ruined by any varnish in the system. It was most likely already worn out from neglect.

What kind of car is this? Many Fords will howl like a parrot with its foot caught after exchanging the fluid.
A plastic pipe through a rubber stopper connected to a hand held vacuum pump pulling 15 in vac for a couple of hours sitting does the trick.

the pump i had that issue with was on a 1998 escort zx2. it had much higher mileage-140,000 miles. all i did on it was run a bg powersteering flusher(2 tubes in the reservoir, one sucks, one pumps new fluid) on it flushing mercon 5 through it. after swapping the fluid it howled like a siren.

2001 mustang sohc 4.6 with hydroboost

i'm having a hard time visualizing that, is it sucking the return line? i hope its not that easy to get air in the system

Not sure about the hydroboost system but many Fords develop noise even after the turkey baster method.
My expedition got noisy immediately after swapping out the fluid.

From the hardware store i got a rubber stopper slightly larger than the filler cap and a piece of stiff plastic tubing about 1/4" in diameter.
Drill a small hole in the center of the stopper and lube the tube with PS fluid to push it through.

connect it to the vacuum hose of a hand held mityvac and pull approx 15 in vacuum, make sure it holds the vacuum and leave it for a few hours.
The pump was silent afterwards, its worth a try.

You need to use Mercon V ATF in the power steering.
Mobil 1 ATF would be a good, easy to find synthetic that should work.

I put an ounce or two of Auto-RX in my PS reservoir with new fluid after TBing it. I ran it about 1000 miles and TB'd the pump again. I D&R'd it again about 1000 miles later and all the squeeling was gone (in my Buick). I recommend ARx for this application.

Noise at 55K?
Too bad! How is the color of the fluid?
A turkey baster flush is good because you will not allow any air into the system.

Amsoil ATF for 7.50/qt? I don't see how unless you are talking about price before tax and shipping?

I flushed an F150 pump with Amsoil and it was somewhat quieter after it warmed up. But I think it had more to do with the old, worn-out fluid that was in there.
