Electric Vehicle Conversion: Volvo S40 pump to 1984 Jeep CJ-7 stock Saginaw - what fluid??

Is it primed? You may need to get fluid in the lines first time, then connect them up.
Pump starts when Key On.

Return hose (at pump) completely dry.

I think this points to needing to prime. I can try the turkey baster idea of filling the pressure hose, if you guys think that'll work to get it primed.

Wait, found it, or at least a big part of it - no fluid.

It must have taken a huge gulp that was eaten by the steering knuckle and sent none back through the return - hence the hose was clean.

Looking in the pump, it was empty.

Added to full line, ran it, back and forth - absolutely can feel some assist now, seems to stall at the center point but that might be due to being parked at the moment - more friction to turn the wheel.

Can't dive it right now, something's wrong with the motor, only goes walking speed - working on that first.

One more thing, the fluid is completely black and THICK.

So, before anyone says it, I need to do a full drain of the pump, fill it and do it again - sound right?

Weird that it’s black. Don’t really like that. Used rack? Once it’s clean, you can consider a magnefine inline filter.

@4x4 EVC - good job

I take it you didn't clean or flush the Pump and the rack?
You take it correct - I'm having a problem with the test drive - it's seems to be doing a huge current draw but the motor doesn't move the vehicle much at all. So, can't move the steering wheel back and forth because something's killing it's draw also.

As soon as I get that fixed, I'll pull the radiator and do the drain and flush.

Thanks

Once you get your multiple problems corrected with this experiment then report back with a new post. Get someone to help you if needed.

I don't see this current thread providing any further useful information at the present time so we will close it.
