i replaced my axle and then refilled the transmission with valvoline import multi atf. it is specd for dex 3 but my shifting is notchier than usual. saturns are notchy as is but its worse than usual. this is on the 98 sl2. what gives isnt there a thicker fluid i could use that would make the shifting more buttery. this transmission does not like shifting above 5 1/2 grand and does not usually shift to first without resistance unless it is stopped. what gives and what should i use?

You should never be putting it into first unless you are taking off or going at maybe a 3mph roll. I drove a sl 2 manual once, worst feeling thing ever, I felt like I was beating on the car rowing and forcing my way through gears like that, I'll keep my one finger smooth shifting Honda transmission...

Try another ATF I guess, not sure whats best to use in this case.

hondas are too smooth but saturns are to notchy. my old cavalier had a decent feel. that's the only good thing that car had. every stick ive owned when rolling to a stop you could hit first foot still on clutch no issue the saturn is reluctant to do it.

I have found it more difficult to get into first from a less than 5mph roll depending on the fluid used.

Why change down when you are rolling to a stop?

Just select the appropriate gear to to make forward progress when the time comes to do so.

In normal daily driving, downshifting IN ADVANCE just courses wear and tear.

There was a time when a Non Syncro 1st gear (on a 4 speed) was not unusual.

Pennzoil makes a Synchromesh but from reading on Saturn forums it doesn't work well because it's too thick, especially when cold. I got the Amsoil at Napa, and I've seen it at a couple other local auto parts stores too.

Be warned though, the Amsoil isn't cheap. $12-13/quart. Well worth it though IMO.

Redline and Pennzoil, but it will only, possibly, reduce the wear on your syncro rings.
You could learn to double clutch down changes if you feel you need to drive like that.

Dont force it into first gear when rolling to a stop, you will wear the gears and clutch must faster. Instead put the clutch in, and lightly push it into first, it will pop in when the syncros line up properly.

It not better me you due to some reasons I drove a sl 2 manual once, worst feeling thing ever, I felt like I was beating on the car rowing and forcing my way through gears like that, I'll keep my one finger smooth shifting Honda transmission.

You dont appreciate a Honda transmission until you drive something else. My Neon R/T grinded reverse, tough to get into gear... But both my Hondas are smooth as butter. Esp. my 6-speed trans with a short throw shift, redline fluid, and upgraded shift bushings. About as good as it gets right there!

i like how the honda is and would prefer it over notchy shifting. but i do like a slight mechanical feel. what does honda do to make them shift so smooth?

Idk lol, better engineered tranmissions? For example, 04-08 S2000s have carbon fiber reinforced syncros on the first 4 gears.

sometimes even when stopped if i try to put it in first it wont slip right in. kinda annoying....amsoil syncromesh is 39.00 thats an awful lot for fluid lol

Not really, my hondas are speced for 60k (severe interval) mile trans fluid changes. $39 over 60k miles is wayyyy cheaper than an oil change.

Or you could just use OEM.

I don't think I have gone more than 15k on a transmission change, but I rip on mine every drive and do some track days, I'd rather spend 25 dollars for 3qts of new fluid than 5hrs changing transaxles and 350+ on a used b series transmission (AND hope it works) every year.

I don't even bother going just straight neutral to R, I always push it into 1st/3rd to stop the rotation before I try R so I don't ever grind.

i would use amsoil or redline but its annoying to have to order stuff online and wait a week. i tried ordering from a couple local people before. they sucked. they were like lost that i wanted to purchase some amsoil stuff. so screw it i wont use amsoil. i hate hassling with nonsense like that. i like going to a store getting what i need and going home and using it.

There should be an Amsoil dealer within reasonable distance.

There is in almost every situation....
