I think my PureOne may be bad, unless its because its larger then normal for my application.

I had installed an over sized purolator Pureone filter on my jeep a little over a week ago and the last 2 days i have Noticed my engine was really loud with engine noise on start up for a little over 1 seconds then stopped once oil pressure built up. I have never had this problem on my jeep. I went from a standard size 14670 P1 to a 30001 over sized filter on my jeep. Would this be a cause for the noise or does it just seem like the anti drain back valve is bad?

last winter i used a cheap dealer filter and valvoline durablend with no problems and then a standard size fram xtended guard with Mobil 1 10w30 and did not have a problem.

This year we had a mild winter but i used Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5w-40 with the standard 14670 with no problems even on the few days it got below freezing. But now with mobil 1 0w-40 and the 30001 i have weird start up chatter. so i wonder if its just a [censored] filter or if its because i used a larger filter.

Im not sure if i should just leave it be or try a different filter.

Go to Ford and grab an FL-1A. See if the noise goes away.

Yep.

I had this EXACT same thing on my (now totaled) '01 Saturn SL1. I put multiple extended length PL20195's on it and had it happen on each of them when the car sat over a day or when it was cold out.

My ZJ's 4.0 had the same symptoms running a pureone in the winter. I think I had a defective filter. I replaced it with a motorcraft fl1a, leaving the oil in and it went away. Never did get a chance to cut that one open. This was with 5w30.

it has been very cold out the last 2 days, in the teens around the time i needed the jeep but was 3 degrees last night and almost that cold the night before. I may try the motorcraft FL-1A especially because my walmart sells them for a good price. I just also need to buy another quart of oil too

I had a Pure1 30001 that did the same thing on my LA 318 TBI. I removed it and put the classic 30001 back in and been using them exclusively since.

Although the 40017 would fit, and so would the Giganto Napa/wix 1714/51714

Tried a long filter on my little engine, and got an engine light for 2 seconds until the pressure built up. Didn't try another one to see if it was the filter or the car.

Walmart sells a Mopar and a Bosch D+ for that engine. The ADV sounds like its missing or not working. Not all engines need a ADV so it might not be in every filter.

I have the same engine in my WJ and the engine died at 94K due to broken piston skirt. Not unheard of for that year/engine.

a "cheap dealer filter" is a mopar which is a great filter made by purolator...
Use the 14670 and have no problems

The filter in question is an FL-1A equivalent and most definitely has an ADBV.

I've yet to notice an issue with this in my mom's 99 WJ 4.0 with a PL30001 filter and T6. I've never seen it started below 15* F, but at that point, it's nice and quiet.

The PL14670 on my ZJ is pretty quiet as well, but it's a bit tough to tell, as the modded engine in my ZJ has a nice sewing machine clatter to the valvetrain anyway.

it has a Anti drain back valve. i inspected the filter heavily before installing it, even made sure the filter pleats had equal consistent spacing lol. I started it up again tonight after cooling for 8 hours and heard nothing. Im going to keep listening and if its only every once and a while when its real cold out ill leave it. if its everyday ill grab a different filter.

also when i say cheap dealer filter, it was not from a jeep dealer. it was a filter from a used car dealership that i bought it from. im actually not sure what brand it was so it very well could have been a nice filter.

Are you sure oversize filter has same psi settings? It may be a reason.

I have no clue, i just read that ALOT of people were using them on their 4.0 jeeps so i figured id give it a try.

more surface area to the filter seemed like a good idea, more area for oil to flow threw media means less bypass time when oil is cold, more dirt holding capacity, the 30001 filter is rated 99% at 20 microns so i figured why not?

started it again today (much warmer) and again had no problem.
Like someone else said happens to them, its only when it sits for longer then 16-24 hours or when very cold. today it sat for less then 12 hours since last use and is warmer.

Interesting you bring this up. On my 2000 Cherokee, I have had Purolator PureOnes on my Jeep 4 times. Each time they had start up noise. I've used both the bigger filter and stock size. I switched to the Purolator Classics and haven't had any noise since. I wonder if it has to do with the sideways oil filter on the 4.0L, and maybe the Silicone ADBV is TOO flexible?

Try a Purolator Classic and see if that changes things.

I use the oversize P1 30001 on my 3 Dodge Caravans and never had problems. 2 of the Caravans 3.3L the filter hangs straight down, 3rd Caravan 3.0 filter is about 30-45 deg. angle.
