I think many dino SM oils actually exceed spec minimums and are fine in Euro cars as long as visc is correct. If a normal driver in US were to change 5w30 in winter and 10w-40 in summer, they would not encounter any oil related problems if oci is fine too.
After reviewing and comparing 5w-40 spec oils to 5w30 synthetic oils, I believe the spec oil offers no advantage over PP or SynPower. If anything, the otc oils are better, with newer additives. The spec oils are locked into the additive pack which they used to pass the spec test. They can't be reformulated with the newer add packs we see.
