I have a Topdon OBD 2 code reader bluetooth dongle which works well for reading DTCs but I need something that can do live data. Preferably something that isnt super entry level but is a good value. I really hate the subscription base and would love to buy something that just works and will work for years to come without buying subscriptions.

For example, the ZF transmission needs to be at 40-50 degrees fluid temp before I can check the final level in my Range Rover. I need to be able to check the temp live to set the level. What scanner should I get that would show me this between $0 - $200?

Thank you

I can read ATF temps with a $20 dongle plus a suitable app on my Android for my Toyotas.

For iOS, I use Car Scanner Elm 327. It's a silly name, but it works awesome. It's free with minimal ads, and $8 buys you the full version forever. I use it on our Carnival for oil temps, atf temps, coolant, etc etc. PIDs are dependent on what your vehicle supports, of course. But it shows live data and updates very fast. iOS is finicky about what bluetooth adapters it supports, so check that out if you haven't already.

Ok ill play the mystery game Toyota Tim ... What app are you using and does it work with IOS.
Well... I'm glad you asked!

I have the BAFX ELM327 that only works with Androids via Bluetooth but there are other similar dongles that work with iOS for sale on Amazon. That will get your phone connected to your vehicle's OBD2. It can read CELs and reset them.

As far as apps, some dongles come with an app. I used Torque Light for my dongle but that didn't read the ATF temperature PID. It needed the full version. I tried another app called OBDMax and I was able to import the ATF temperature PID for my vehicle.

With Torque Light, you can see real time O2 sensor readings and of course coolant temperature and a lot of other things. You can see ever more with the full version of Torque. Basically, if you're vehicle has a sensor measuring it, you can read it through the OBD2. There are limitations on ABS. Those little dongles are extremely powerful for what they cost.

I picked up one of these a year ago and have been very happy with it, though more expensive than some others. It has advanced PID for a lot of manufactures. I just leave the dongle plugged in all the time and can look at any info I need on my phone at any time.

App is a little clunky but works, and can record and graph in real time.
