We're mattress shopping. So far, the Ortho Avant Calm Breeze 10" is at the top of the heap. While at the Ortho store, we tried the Beautyrest Black, Stearns and Foster, Sealy Posturepedic, and Tempur-Pedic. All were nice, but I'm not a Tempur-Pedic fan. Wifey likes firm, I'm not quite as particular, but firm is fine. Most have a 10-year warranty, the Ortho Avant is lifetime.

Right now, I can get the Ortho Avant for $1500, and I don't want to go a lot higher than that, so no Stearns and Foster for me.

Opinions and experiences welcome.

Put a foam mattress topper on your old mattress and you will be good to go. Really, I have a Tempur-Pedic at home, and put a mattress topper on my vacation home mattress, and it is better than home!

The search option isn't the best anyway. Not trying to be nasty....have fun with the mattress questions. I've just seen at least three threads like this in the past couple of years. I remember because I am amazed at how much money folks will throw away for a mattress....while singing the old song about how much of your life is spent sleeping on it...so they justify the cost.
Sorry...ignore me.

Consumer Reports had an article dealing with mattresses maybe 1 or 2 issues back. They also listed stores selling them. Sleepy's was at the bottom of the list. I would go to Sams.

Duly noted. Done.

Mattresses are really a matter of personal preference.
Buy the one you like that fits your budget.
I was informed on this very forum that I am financially irresponsible because of my choice.
I was told that I didn't need a King size, even though I am 6'4" and 275 lbs.
I have a Select Comfort. My wife likes soft, and I need Firm because of severe back problems. No more arguments over that issue.
I sleep soundly every night on my choice and personal preference.
I hope that you find yours.

Sounds like good advice. Thanks.

I prefer real latex foam over everything else. I have 2 latex mattresses, one of them is 35 years old and still perfect. No sag, no soft spots, perfectly conformal. It instantly conforms, unlike visco-elastic. I also find it cooler than visco-elastic.

I Don't like visco-elastic foam all that much. And visco-elastic foam often settles within a year or two.

The Jameson foam beds really feel good to me also. Marriott hotels often use them and I love 'em.

I've purchased a cheap memory foam mattress from both Sam's Club and Costco. In both cases I was very happy with what I got. The total between both mattresses, one king size and one queen, was about $1300.

We just bought a queen set from The Original Mattress Factory this weekend for $949. We liked it because it's a two-sided mattress that can be flipped and rotated, and because we know where they're made (about an hour north of us in Raleigh, NC). We priced mattresses from Sealy and Serta and thought the value was less with those (one-sided, so you can't flip them).

We bought the Orthopedia Premier Super Pillow Top.

The sales lady in the showroom knew every single detail about it, which was a stark contrast to the folks at other stores. She showed us how they were stitched together, in what order, etc. I joked with her that she knows more about mattresses than I'll ever forget, and she said that she worked in the factory for 16 years in the quilting department.

The comment earlier that mattresses are personal choices is spot-on. It's hard to compare what someone else bought because they'll lay very different and feel different. I can sleep on anything, but my wife is pretty particular. We tried many, and she liked one.

+1

That's a good way to get a couple more years out of an old mattress. I did that to mine about two years ago, and it worked out pretty well. I think it's getting to the point of replacement now though.
