Bulli, find a school counselor or other motivated adult to teach you life skills necessary to make a go of it.

Either you pay the dues up front (hard work/training) or you pay it later, forever struggling to get on your feet.

I really think it is one of the toughest times for young people to get started in life, career wise.

Good luck.

Roger and echo that !

Yes, with American economy looking fairly grim these days (gotta admit that it's at the brink of full-term recession), one has to tough out seriously to stay afloat on his/her career (living), or otherwise you'll luck out.

Me? I got 3 jobs going: regular computer work that gives me the mortgage payment, p/t mech to pay for my kid's diapers and pocket spending $$, and a father-n-son industrial repair biz to develop my future career (probably gonna spinoff as a homebased f/t biz some day so that I can quit my regular job). Oh yes, did I also mention that I'm into tube audio biz (designer/commission builder)?

so much for my work life to keep my family afloat. It's hard to be middle-class these days...

The Air National Guard and Air Force Reserves is probably the best part time job for someone right out of high school.

Tons of jobs from:

electronics, mechanics, computers, air traffic controller, paralegal, radar/satellite systems, construction, flight medic, ....etc, the list go on and on.

Where else can you learn a job skill and also get money for college working a part time job ?

Depending on what job (AFSC) you choose, your security clearance opens doors to other opportunities when you do finish college.

if i were 18 again i would probably go the military route - but something technical like some folks have mentioned air force aircraft mech or something similar.

Even within sensible military options, there's two paths to "managing" your path. Security or speculative. For example, you can do a limited use vocation like cryptographer with the notion that you can probably get a job in embassies ..CIA ..etc later on. It's your access to government security oriented jobs. It also makes it much easier to work for government contractors. You're pre-qualified.

i was 26 when joined the army. no job no money no nothing. man that was a jump! but i am grad i did. now i am 41 and look back at it what a ride. friend just joined and got 20G's just for sighing to drive trucks. (88M) 3 years. plus a BIG gi-bill. i stayed 5 years and it went by really fast. join now get the money learn-learn-learn while in then get out,you will be better of and ahead of the game when you get out.they take alot but give alot.

Don't forget the health care field also.....all kinds of tech. jobs that don't require a full college education.

With just an LPN degree, my daughter is making $25 to $30/hour right out of school.

And this field will only increase in demand. As our population ages, and people live longer, they're going to want more medical services. If I were 18 again, I'd focus on health care, pharma or bio-tech industries. This generation is going to have a lifetime of high paying work if they play their cards right.
