Yes, it's a blanket statement, however one I feel pretty confident in making after reading on this site.

The topic then turned to where to have it done. I suggested an independent mechanic first, since they depend on repeat customers and not volume to survive. Somebody else tossed out Sears, and another person chimed in to avoid Jiffy Lube as too expensive. I ended up suggesting Wal-Mart, since they are fairly inexpensive for the basic oil change with a fine oil and filter. Hopefully she listens to the herd and stays away from Jiffy Lube. So, another one possibly saved!

An oil hobbiest like myself would tell her to change her own oil and dont trust anyone else.

Sorta hard when you aren't mechanically inclined. Or don't have friends with houses in the area who likely won't mind if I do my vehicle and one of theirs as payment for letting me borrow their garage.

It's easy enough if you have the space and supplies, both of which I currently am without. Likely my classmate never had the inclination to do her own car maintenance, and is thinking of oil as cheaper=better. I will have to ask, though. If I can steer her in the right direction I will. AKA a good dino oil with a non-Fram filter.
