Although I use Group-IV Synthetics, I know that there is so little difference in wear on an engine, that it does not matter if you are using a "Quality" Group-II oil or not. The only real advantage to Synthetics, Group-IV and Group-V (not sure about Group-III) is that they:
1. Can take higher heat (oil temperatures) without forming sludge, and still lubricate.
2. Can still pour (circulate) at very cold temperatures, needed at engine startups in the winter.
As for "additional wear" with regular Group-II oils, I take it with a "grain of salt". I've done the math, using the wear rates published by various Synthetic manufactures. You will notice that on the charts that they show, it looks like a large difference, buy when you do the math, and plug in the actual numbers, you will see that any additional wear would only show after driving that engine for 20 years, or more, and even then, the figures are so little, that it does not matter. (Do you know how small nanometers and micrometers are?)
