My 1995 Contour needed a waterpump in the 4th year. I wouldn't consider that a major repair, though. It also had about 75k miles at that time, had I not been driving it so much I expect it probably wouldn't have needed a waterpump until the 6th or 7th year. The replacement waterpump has lasted almost another 150k...

1991 Escort, 1997 Escort, 2004 Malibu Classic did not need major repairs during the first 4 years of their life.

You didn't own a new MB, BMW, Jaguar ... the last 10 years ?

Our 2004 Xj8 has not required any repairs since new, it's five years old now, but only has about 20K miles on it. I have had a lot of Jags and never had any thing that a couple of hundred bucks worth of parts couldn't put right.

Never owned or had any desire to own MB or BMW, so can't comment on those marques.

Frankly, the build quality of modern cars is so high, I don't see why any repairs should be needed in the first four or five years of ownership, absent abuse.
