My 2001 Crown Vic patrol car just turned over 200000 miles on a steady diet of 3000 to 3500 mile OCI on Motorcraft 5w20 and Wix filters. The engine still runs strong and it is operated in much more severe conditions than 95% of most vehicles on the road. If you are still on the fence about using 5w20 in a vehicle calling for it, dont worry the body will fall apart before the engine.

Excellent!

Thanks for the photo.

I also notice the gear indicator is in the same place as our 150-230k Ford Trucks at work...

The gear indicator is ajustable.

Trust me, with our Trucks at work the indicator is the least of our worries.

It's just interesting that the indicator is the same.

Are you the only driver of your radio car or is it asigned to the other shifts (ie; am,pm and em shifts?)When I was a deputy our crown vics were hammered at 90,000 with 5,000 mile oci,s. They would ping and knock severly under load at low rpm,s and generally just run terrible, But they were serviced using bulk 5w/30. I know that when a vehicle is driven by one person it is usually taken better care of.

Each Deputy is assigned his/her own patrol vehicle every six years. I am due for a new one in feb 2007. We have found out that it is cheaper in the long run if each individual person is assigned a vehicle vs having pool cars.

That is promiseing!!! It is funny because my Tempo's shifter never lined up properly with [D] either. tell me does the steering wheel have a lot ofplay in it too. Every F150 and old muscle car Ford I have ever driven and my tempo all had a lot of play in the steering wheel. You had to move the wheel right and left to keep them going down the road.

After all that Ford went through in the late 70s with their shifter fiasco (and killing people as a result), you'd think they'd pay more attention to the shift indicator nowadays!! Most people may not remember that problem, but it's still fresh in my mind!

motorcraft 5W-20 is a semi-synthetic, right?

so... whats the point of this thread? proving that a car that is specified for 5W-20 can run well on it? i didn't realize that was in question. i was under the impression that 5W-20 was a great oil, and that anyone with a car that specifies it, uses it. and i thought alot of people who have cars that spec 5W-30 even use 5W-20 instead.

Before you joined the board, there were a lot of very heated debates on 5w-20. I remember some saying that ford and other mfg's only care about their engines up to 100k, and thats why they spec 5w-20. There were a lot of dumb arguments, a lot of repetitive threads which just went back and forth about the same things.

If your car averaged 18 mpg, it has burned 11,111 gallons of gas so far. 5w20 saves about 1% over 5w30, with lots of idling time, so you've saved about 111 gallons of gas.

i see.

i've just never heard of people saying 5W-20 is somehow "bad"

so, if my 92' lexus SC400 (quad-cam V8) specifies a 5W-30 oil, would it be a bad idea to use 5W-20 instead? or how about some 0W-30 like GC?

I would not put a 20w oil in an engine spec'd for a 30w oil. If it gets cold you might try the GC, it's still a 30w oil.

GC is actually THICKer than most PCMO 5w30's at ambient temps down well below zero..As fro the Toyota/Lexus on 5w20, There is a TSB allowing 5w20 in 2006 and newer Toyota drivetrains.

Great job on the cruiser. Seems that BITOG DOGMA has really made a leap in a week.
