I have not been impressed with Mobil oils

After running Super 5k in my Hyundai, and Super Syn in my Prius, I can say they both are very underwhelming and average at best. I saw a little peak in gas mileage when using it in the Prius and a little less so in the Hyundai. But the engines are noisy and don't run very smoothly.

I have about 3k left on the Mobil Super Syn before I drain it, but I hate it when I start my engine and it sounds like a tin can. Never was like this before the Mobil Syn.

I also remember running Mobil 1 in my old Grand Am GT before I joined this board - it wasn't any different feeling or performing than the Kendall oil I would have put in by the local tire place.


Sorry, just a discussion starter. Not really a fan of Mobil oils over here. Does anybody have similar (not opposing perhaps) experiences they'd like to share?

I tried many brands over the years in many engines, I could not tell the difference between one brand to another, and I could not feel the difference between syn and dino either. But I felt difference when I changed from M1 0W40 to PP 5W20 in the E430, the engine is much quieter and rev smoother with PP 5W20.

Sounds to me it is more related to the anti-drain back valve on the oil filter rather than the oil itself. Try an OEM filter next change and see if that helps. Also, use the Mobil 1 line, not the super syn--we use all Mobil 1 oils in our cars and they run very smooth. Don't give up on the Mobil oils-try a filter brand change first.

I get around 1-3% better mileage with the synthetic oils versus the conventional. Don't expect a dramatic increase with syn oils.

When I had my old beater 1989 Pontiac Sunbird, I noticed that conventional oil darkened up quicker than synthetic. Don't know why but it did. (Supertech dino to Napa Syn). I use to run 10w-30 ST dino in the Sunbird, when I changed to 5w-30 Napa Syn I actually did notice a little bit of increased power. The engine only had 85 hp new to begin with lol!

This might be my imagination but to the touch I think synthetic feels smoother/more slippery compared to gritty conventional.

Now that I have a much newer car, So far I've only run synthetic and the Saturn doesn't seem to have a favorite. Both Penz Ultra 5w-30 and Mobil 1 0w-30 seem to sound the same and darken up around the same mileage.

I ran Mobil Super 5k in my Granada last winter and the only thing I noticed different was that RPM's came up quicker and the effect lasted longer than after other oil changes.

Some engines (Toyota's 1-ZZFE, for example) love it, some (most Hondas I've tried it in) hate it. Yours all seem to fall into the indifferent category, leaning more towards hating it, which seems to be where the majority of engines out there (from reading these boards) happen to be.

That's not to say Mobil makes bad oils, the 1-ZZFEs in my Corollas are both getting M1HM for their next OCIs because the consensus is that the 1-ZZFE runs cleanest and strongest on that oil.

Me, too. I wouldn't be able to tell the difference between Supertech and Mobil 1, unless one were 20w-50 and the other were 0w-20. I have seen different oils "do" things differently, like consume more or less, or leak more or less. Aside from that, I'd be clueless.

I am not sure what you really expected. MPG would be very hard to tell as would performance. Sound of the engine at startup is more likely to be the filter than the oil.

The UOA is the only valid way to judge oil, along with a look under the covers of the engine. But even that would only be valid if it was over several oil changes.

The statement that the same grade motor oil of a different brand makes your car run less smoothly is just a bit far fetched.

I expected at least another 40+ MPG on top of my highway mileage! Looks like I'm disappointed again...

Maybe, maybe not. It's accepted that add packs vary from one to another around here. I would say the differences would be minor, and non-threatening. In a circle of car guys, it's likely that every little difference is amplified.

This is a butt-dyno topic which is fine. One fact though. Toyota uses XOM as the base for its Toyota brand synthetic oils. Your using the knockoff super syn, step up to the M1 to see if Toyota's on to something.
