I have an original 1965 Chevelle with 26,000 miles. Should I just use a conventional motor oil?

I don't know if you really need higher ZDDP with the stock engine, but if you do you probably don't need like boutique classic car oil or Mobil 1 V-twin levels of ZDDP. Good choices for oils with higher levels of ZDDP than modern PCMO are any of the Shell Rotella HDEO products (except multi-vehicle), Mobil Delvac Extreme, Chevron Delo 400 XSP 15W-40, Any Valvoline VR1 product, or Castrol GTX Classic Car.

Mobil 1, 15W-50 would also be a good choice. It is now a Group III oil, which means it really is just a conventional oil that has been highly processed. It has excellent properties, won't create any sludge or varnish and will pump nicely when cold. Overall a superb choice.

OH, and that's an awesome car!!!!!

You can see the heater hoses...sooooo, no deletion there.
I love how the engine pic was taken with it running.
LOVE the plate number!
Best of luck with it. Don't let a tornado take it away!

I did notice the heater core box and hoses but there’s no heater “hvac“ controls on the dash. IDK.

They are just hidden in the picture by the steering wheel. Controls on 65 were smaller and located under the third gauge from the left.

It's a shame the troll comment was introduced so early to a brand new member. Not very welcoming.

I can understand the concern about using synthetic, especially for a non-BITOGer. There's plenty of anecdotal stories still floating around the interweb and at car enthusiast shows about people switching over to synthetic on vintage cars and the resulting leaks. True or not, the stories still exist.

Welcome to the site and keep seeking answers. Much has changed with oil formulations the past decade or two. AWESOME CAR - thank you for sharing.

You gotta love how clearly PARK stands out on the pedal.
I can see the left and right turn signal lights but is there a third light at the tach's 6 o'clock position...between "RPM" and "100's"?
Also, what's the knob above "LIGHTS" on the leftmost?

Hello Kmart3906 luckily the weather is on our side today! The sun and I are pleased to offer you a warm welcome!

Thanks for sharing such a nice car and sorry to hear about your pop's passing as I know you must have nice memories with him and the car.
Enjoy your stay.

John

Definitely not a Z16 lol
Definitely. If it were the rare Z16 I figure it would be under armed guard or lockd up secure!
It is still one of the finest un-restored examples I have ever seen. We do not come across the 1965s hardly ever at car shows.
Wife and I were blown away recently when one , a 1965 (not near as nice as yours) in white passed us up on a road close to home.
I probably scared the guy LoL for stalking and / following him a good 10-11 miles.

I use Rotella T4 10w-30 in a straight 6 - 235, that is in a 1952 Chevy DeLuxe.

That's probably as close as one could get as an affordable/easily available "conventional" oil, that isn't some sort of specialty oil.
HDEOs are probably one of the best oil on the shelves .

Do I have to be concerned about old seals that newer synthetics could get past...
I was going to say just that. I believe the conventional wisdom does say no concern with 90s cars, but not so with older ones. There are many here more expert than I…
