Hello everyone. I change my oil using the Nissan serere service OCI of 3750 miles. I realize that the Fram extra Guard oil filter will do this mileage just fine. What I want to know however is this.....does the Fram Tough Guard oil filter filter smaller particles than the Extra Guard thus offering better protection or does the Tough Guard simply hold more dirt allowing the filter to be changed less often? I just bought a Fram Tough Guard for my next oil change and am wondering if the Extra Guard would serve me just as well using a 3750 mile oil change. Thanks for the help.

Or you could use an Ultra & use it for FOUR 3750 OCIs, as long as your engine is clean, it is rated for 15K. A Tough Guard could do 2 3750 OCIs pretty easily.

I wouldn't get too caught up in particle count. Your engine won't know the difference between the two.

Why such a short OCI? That's the severe maintenance schedule I would assume.

according to Fram's website, and the information on the boxes of the filters, the extra guard is 95% efficient; vs. 99% for the tough guard

You are right on with this captain

The TG can go for two runs so , you can skip one. I have a From Ultra on now. Going to run it for close to 15k. Like you I change the oil in my car 3 to 4k miles. The VQ35 is very hard in oil from all what I've read on the Nissan, Infinti site. Plus almost half my driving is town type driving. But that being said.. Run the TG for 7500. The Ultra you could go 15k because you have taken such good care of your car

Thanks for the help. The engine in my car is this one MR18DE. It is a ground pounding 122BHP.

My wife and I like this little car and it does what we need it to do. Why the severe service schedule? Well the car goes short trips, we live in the mountains so a lot of long hill pulls, and a 6 speed manual so there are times you have to hold a gear to make it climb a hill at low speeds. The engine in this car works pretty hard so I would rather make sure the car will last by using the OEM OCI of 3750 compared to risking the 7500 mile over the road schedule. An oil change is cheap, a new engine is not. LOL

Yes the Tough Guard has better filtering, more synthetic fibers in the media, and a higher contaminant holding capacity than the Extra Guard.

At 3750 miles you will certainly NOT be stressing the Extra Guard though. Running a Tough Guard for 2 or 3 OCI's does yield you both better performance and savings though I realize many people prefer to change filter every oil change. If that's the case the orange can probably makes the most sense for you.

What number Fram?

Many filters have "oversized" brothers
that have the same base and bypass pressure,
but are a third longer...

I use the "orange can" on my lawn tractor and beater car,
but on the "good" car I use a better filter...

Well yeah.. The severe service does make A LOT of sense. I've driven all over Va. If you have to do a lot of mountain climbing that alone makes sense. I love driving out in the western part of Virginia. I would do exactly what you are doing

There are a good number of very smart and helpful people on here. I have learned a lot from them already. Still have plenty more to learn but that is fun and good deal too.

The Extended Guard is more than sufficient. Look how many Honda's are still running well with >200k miles using 66.5% efficiency (@20 microns) Fram made filters. But using the more efficient Tough Guard 2x is actually more economical and the construction including a silicon ADBV is better.

+1

I agree with the severe service schedule; thus, you don't really need a long-life filter. However, many times the Tough Guard filter does not cost that much more than the Extra Guard filter. If it doesn't cost that much more, personally I would choose the TG filter because it is a better filter overall (better media, better efficiency, and it appears to have better fiber endcaps, although I don't know if that's true for sure, and it appears to hold up well -- based on pictures I have seen here on BITOG).

And +10000 to the statements in blue.

in my opinion the only filter that fram makes that looks good is the ultra..
Its either Wix or the ultra in my book. We use all Wix at my engine shop...It used to be purolater until all the tearing issues. Im happy with Wix.
