I have tried many oils in my car, ranging from Motorcraft to Amsoil. Currently I am doing an AutoRX treatment along with baseline Penzoil with a puralator filter. All of this to say I would like to get everyones input here on a good synthetic oil. When I ran Amsoil the last OC it seemed to get dirty fast and I believe it was cleaning all of the deposits left behind from Mobil1. Anyways whats a good group 4 oil? What do you guys think about Penzoil Platinum or Penzoil ultra? Is Amsoil really the best thing I can be putting in my car? Is it worth it? I want to put good oil in my car, for peace of mind and for the fact that I am rough on my car (Short trips, Floor it often)I do 3kOCI. Thanks

1) color isn't everything. In fact it isn't anything.
2) 3k is way too often. Flooring it is no big deal at all.
3) any oil you listed is super.

I really doubt that.

I'll try to answer all the questions you asked:

1. Mobil 1 will not leave deposits in your engine. The quick darkening of the Amsoil is not necessarily indicating cleaning action. Some oils turn dark very quickly while others stay golden brown longer; oil color is not a good judgement tool. Mobil 1 is an outstanding oil to use.

2. Many of the synthetics on the shelf here in the U.S. are made from group III oil basestocks. I too when I first joined BITOG was looking for a group IV oil. However, after some reading you will realize that group III oils are just as good. Remember group III oils will do better in areas that group IV will not and vice versa.

3.Pennzoil Platinum and Ultra are two very good oils. They are both favorites on this forum; use either with confidence!

4. Amsoil is a good oil, however, in my opinion, I can't justify the extra cost over a synthetic readily available on the shelf. You ask 'Is it worth it', that is a subjective judgement on your part. I would suggest reading all you can on this site and form you own opinion. Using Amsoil or another synthetic will give your engine many miles of service.

Based on the driving environment your car sees, and the fact you change every 3k miles, I would use a reasonably priced synthetic such as Quaker State Ultimate Durability if you are focused on the best oil for the money. Otherwise, any oil, conventional or synthetic would be just fine for your car.

Agree....M-1 is one of the better cleaning oils available.

How long did you leave the M-1 in?

BTW.....IMO...3000 OCI's (on synthetic)....is a complete waste of of good oil, $$$, and time.

If you insist on doing 3000 OCI's, save a few bucks and just go to a good conventional....like Pennzoil (Yellow Bottle).

3k OCI? Cheap dino and cheap filters. Doesn't matter what you use, oil won't be the death of it if you do 3k OCIs.

give us details on your vehicle, please..

walmart supertec will do you fine for 3K with a NAPA silver or the like.

Use the Pennzoil yellow bottle for 5K with a NAPA gold.

If you gonna buy M1, at least run the miles up and get your monies worth! Its a great oil. dont waste it.

I like Amsoil. buy a fumoto drain valve. put the amsoil in, run it 9-10K and get a UOA done (fumoto drain valve will make tapping a small amount more doable) to see where you're at and go from there.

Im def' not into wasting oil/time/$

4.0 mustang v6. You don't have to believe me on the Mobil 1 vs amsoil color change. I know what I saw. I check my oil level Iften and noticed that after 2k amsoil was a darker brown like Mobil one was at 3. I ran Mobil one 5 times or so in my car. I'm not one to run my oil longer and use higher micron filters in order to do so like some members here. I care about my car and don't mind spending the money. I don't care who you talk to, but oil is t it's best in the bottle. I'll stick to 3k

Yup

Here is a similar condition. Well maybe! I use the same oil in 2 different vehicles/engines and Sixxer use 2 different oils(or more) in the same engine but, here what I'm talking about.

I run the same exact oil(s), which ever brand(s) I have in my stash, and the same OCI's in my 2 cars:
'01 Lexus RX 3.0 V6
'04 Altima 2.5 S 4cyl

Since new they both darken differently. The Altima darkens very quickly and is black at 3K where as the Lexus never gets black even at >3K-5K miles even today(8 & 11 years later).

As mentioned, the Nissan oil gets dark since the 1st OCI. Almost as though I had a brand new dirty engine right from the factory. When the Altima was newer('04-'07) and I was using SL/SM oils, the oil at 3K miles was...Blaahaahaack! Today at 3K, it's just black! Maybe it's more Calcium in the SM/SN oils? It does seem to stay cleaner looking, longer!

On the other hand, my Lexus 3.0 V6 1MZFE(supposed to be a sludger), on a recent OCI I let it go 8 months and 3500 miles, as were just weren't drivnig it often. The oil still looked very good(caramel/brown).

Keep in mind, I use the same oil in both cars and they both get lots of city driving similarly.
