Swapping oil filter boxes is so commonplace here, it's second nature to check the box first. Sad but necessary.

I've been guilty of getting creative at the junkyard. $50 for a longblock. I found a "turbo" 3.8L crank which came in 1 out of 3 NA 3.8L engines in '86 and '87. I swapped the turbo crank into the best block I could find along with the "turbo" bridged heads which were also randomly installed on many NA 3.8L engines. I wouldn't call it outright dishonest, just putting the best parts together in one longblock.

I agree, some people are just plain immoral. A guy on one of the Zune forums(MS Zune Mp3 player) made a post and flat out admitted what he did. Basically bought a Zune 120GB Mp3 player, carefully opened the box so the sticker's weren't harmed in any way. Then took out the mp3 player, took 2 socks, filled one with a couple of rocks till it weighed about right, then took the other sock and wrapped it around the first one and placed it back in the box.

He returned it back to target, they didn't check the device since the stickers didn't seem to be tampered with and got a free 300 dollar mp3 player(this was about 1 1/2 years ago). Some poor guy probably bought the box, and had a hassle returning it.

A couple weeks ago, one of my friends bought a World of Warcraft monthly access card box from Wal-Mart. When he opened it, there was no card inside! (the cards come in a box like DVDs do + sealed) After inspecting the package, it appears someone used a razor blade and cut the plastic wrap on the bottom, slid the case out, took the card, slid the case back INTO the plastic wrap and taped it shut with clear tape then placed it back on the shelf. Who ever stole that card was a true WoW addict!

I always worry about this when buying non-sealed items, not just auto fluids. Laundry detergent, light bulbs, etc... lots of stuff is easily switched, either in the store or at home and returned.

I saw one (fairly expensive) air filter box for my car had been opened and someone stuck a (presumably cheap) filter in it. The remnants of an earlier switcheroo. I pulled it out a bit so it stuck out of the box so that nobody would get fooled and maybe the stock guy would see it and take it away. Come in next week, it's been closed up and still on the shelf. Reopen it, come next week, closed up again. This happened for about 6 straight weeks before I gave up. Pretty sure it's still there.

I think you should have been a little more obvious, like bring it to the mngrs attention.

when I worked at HD one summer, my area had professional window squeegies. right on the pkg it would say you can purchase replacement rubber strips for them. problem is, HD didn't stock/sell the replacement strip! so, when people came in for the replacement, they would just slide one out of the handle. at one point we had like 5 or 6 handles on the shelf w/o the rubber strip. i showed my mngr what was happening, and he didn't care.

+1, saw the same @ Walmart. I'm sure that's one of the reasons the Extended Guard is cello wrapped. I think it's a small minority of low lifes that would do this. At least I hope.

I see this type of thing all the time at Orchard Supply Hardware.

They have bags of o-rings packaged 2 or 3 to a bag. Most of the bags have finger holes punched through them and one or all of the o-rings are gone; just an empty bag hanging on the hook.

It's pretty sad that people don't even have 59 cents for a couple of o-rings.

This happens in the nut and bolt aisle too.

Isn't the distinction between those two that "amoral" means the actor is without a moral sense, like a sociopath, while "immoral" means the actor knows about the morality (or lack of same) of his action, and goes ahead anyway? (Considering some of the creatures I've seen skulking around my nearest Walmart, I think they go either way.)

In contrast, since we don't expect animals to have a sense of human morality, they would be "unmoral." I think.

amoral def: not involving questions of right or wrong; without moral quality; neither moral nor immoral, or having no moral standards, restraints, or principles; unaware of or indifferent to questions of right or wrong.

immoral def: violating moral principles; not conforming to the patterns of conduct usually accepted or established as consistent with principles of personal and social ethics.

although either could apply, but IMO, swapping filters or shoplifting hardware has less to do w/ not being able to afford something and more to do w/ not caring if its right or not.
I saw a guy the other day in the candy aisle @ wegmans. he opened one of the 'sold by weight' candy dispensers, poured a handful of malted milk balls, and started eating them. didn't even look around first, just took them. to me, that's amoral.

I was getting shoes for one of my kids and opened a box to find an old beat up pair of shoes in it. One of the worst is leaving perishible foods out on a shelf in the grocery store because they are too lazy to put it back. If people will leave a pack of bologna in the magazine rack, they'll do just about anything. Petsmart had these goodie bags for customers yesterday in connection with a dog costume parade. My kids saw a customer pulling the coupons out of each bag when he thought nobody was looking. It goes on and on. Oh, you don't want to know what happens in the back room of restaurants or you won't want to eat out anymore.

My sister once got drunk and vomited on her relatively new comforter. After it was cleaned up, she put it back in the package and returned it.

A buddy of mine used to work at a grocery store in high school. He had a nice little business of stealing things from work. He would steal DVDs, razors, and othr items and then return them to Walmart for store credit. He bought himself a nice digital camera with that money. He also stole beer and cigarettes and would sell them to kids in school.
