I do my own haircut. How about you?

Heck no! I can’t imagine how bad my hair would look if I tried to cut it. ;)The same woman who has cut my hair for 35 years cut mine today. Her shop is 1 mile away, and I walked right in and sat down in the chair (I had a noon appt) and was leaving in 15 minutes. $16 out the door, she made a little more than $1 a minute and I was back home In less than 25 minutes total. She also cuts my wife’s hair for the same price. IMO, a little money well spent!

The thought scares the daylights out of me. No. Never.

Most people I know who cut their own hair go with a pretty short style, what I would call a crew cut or a butch haircut. That's not my thing. The only person I have known that cut his own hair, and that had a cut style that I thought looked good, was the plant manager at a plant I worked at. It really surprised me when he told me he cut his own hair.

It costs me about $200/year to get my hair cut. My barber only uses a trimmer on the sides. Most of my cut is a scissor cut. I can't imagine trying to do that on my own. My barber is also a car guy, so I really enjoy catching up with him about his '67 442 and his '08 SL550, among other things. I consider him a friend, and will miss the day when he retires. Yes, it is coming soon. The thought of finding a new barber is scary enough.

Saving $200/yr is not worth it to me. I'm not a coffee drinker, so I don't spend $100/month on fancy lattes or cappuccinos at the local Starbucks. Same with energy drinks. I can only guess how much people spend on having their daily energy drink fix. I'm pretty thrifty on how I get my television services. No $100+/month for satellite here. I can't recall how long it's been since I've bought a new cellphone. So yea, I have my ways of going cheap.

So there are a lot of things that I save money on. Going cheap on my haircuts will never be one of them.

For those that DIY, I can't imagine how you do the back. By feel? I'm as cheap as the next person, but $25 every 3 or 4 months won't kill me.
Use a mirror set, start slow, larger blade guards. Take off layers. It's tricky at first in mirrors and with non-dominant hand, but it's a easy skill that comes in very handy, and pays for itself in spades.

Allow yourself time to adjust, don't rush. Can take off more if you make a mistake. Worst case, just go down the lowest blade guard. It grows back in a few days.

And honestly not another human cares with any scrutiny what your hair looks like outside of the military, where it's all almost to the skin anyway. As long as it's even and reasonably presentable, nobody is doing spot inspections.

We all think everyone cares, in reality nobody does.

+1 on Flowbee. It cuts just like one would do with scissors- if you combed out an inch with a comb and cut it, or whatever length. No trying to describe what you want etc. I wore out the first one in probably 25 years, and was glad to see it made a comeback when Covid hit, I bought a new one. Made here in Texas.
The Flowbee factory was located in Flour Bluff, a suburb of Corpus Christi, Texas but later moved to Kerrville, Texas.

I promise you, this statement is not true. People notice. I can't tell you how many times I've got compliments on a fresh haircut.

I can imagine no one is saying anything to you when you are doing your own crew cuts, because, in that case you are right. No one cares.

Mind you, I don't have my hair cut for what anyone else thinks. Except my precious wife. What she says matters. Except for her, I get my haircuts because I like it. But people do notice. And yes, even though I keep my hair looking nice just for me and my wife, it is nice to get a compliment.

Yes for more than 15 years. I don't need the wife's help but I do it on my own. Saved thousands of $$$ over the last years.

This what I have,

1) Electric Hair Cutter. I used #3 Blue guard cut guide https://www.walmart.com/ip/Wahl-Col...XHFU-L06pSIMTzyMDzAaAhoHEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds
2) A scissor and comb
3) Small mirror
4) Big wall mirror.

The big mirror is a must and small mirror. I used both mirrors for reflection on finishing touches at the back of my head.

That's it.

The Advantages:
1) You don't need to drive and go to a mall hair salon or the barber shop.
2) You don't need to wait in line
3) You don't have to get upset because the hair stylist/barber cut too much of your hair or too little.
4) You don't have to wear that cloth cape that have been used so many times and your only alternative is to wear it :ROFLMAO:
5) No more barber's rubbing alcohol that's smells awful (it's just me) may not apply to others
6) No more tips.

The Disadvantages:
1) It takes a while to get used to cutting your own hair. By the 3rd time, you'll be an expert (this is my own personal recollection)
Post your picture and we’ll tell you about the other disadvantage.

Sure bud. We all believe you walk out of the barber, traffic accidents ensue, and clocks stop, and women are fainting everywhere.

Think you are witty, don't you? That's good. You need that. Because, as you say above, you sure aren't getting any attention from your hair style. :giggle: :giggle:
I have a dream that all little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by nonsense of a haircut, but by their character.

PS - a man should be able to master scissors and a pair of clippers, a very basic skill.

Seems incompatible logic. You either want compliments from men, and hey that's your business, or women, which is strange for a married man.

I also don't PAY for someone else to cut my hair. I also like haircuts that I give myself, for the satisfaction from the self-reliance of doing it myself, and for saving a full 2 mortgage payments every 10 years, which leads me closer to financial security. Just like I change my own oil and do a huge amount of my own self reliance stuff around here.

As I mentioned between all of the easy stuff I do for myself, saving many tens of thousands of dollars in any given decade of doing so.
