Black oil on a black stick. Hmmm. I have no dam clue how full it is...... on my Dodge the stick was light gray & therefore obvious where the oil "line" was located. (Poor design by Honda IMHO)

Even with my cheaters... errr my glasses, I have a hard time seeing fresh clean oil against a silver metal stick. Takes me several times to determine wet/dry line sometimes.

Try putting it up to some light and look for the glare. Or put paper towel on the dipstick and transfer the oil to the towel without wiping the dipstick.

Warm/hot oil will adhere to a cold dipstick better (and thus easier to read) than to a warm one...let the stick get cold before reinserting it...

What KitaCam said...just wipe off the dipstick until it is dry, reinsert, and you should easily see a glare off some light.

Excellent suggestion!! My 93 olds has those holes in the stick and its easy to read. If i had trouble seeing it, i would not hesitate to drill a few on the drill press. should take about 5 minutes to do.

Dry off dipstick.
Place dipstick in engine.
Remove dipstick and use ambient light to see part of dipstick that's wet.
