Last night, I went to Kragen's and purchased ten quarts of Mobil 1 0w-40 and two Mobil 1 Extended Performance M1-205 Oil Filters for a whopping $86 with tax.

Despite all of the recent M1 discussions, I still have complete confidence in ExxonMobil and their products and will continue to use their 0w-40 product when I need an over-the-counter VW 502.00 approved oil.

Anyway, is Mobil 1 0w-40 and a Mobil 1 Extended Performance Oil Filter the correct combination for a 00 VW Golf 2.0 for the recommended 10k mi service interval?

It still is a good product and will continue to be. Can it afford not to be? Think of the hit they would take with all the factory fill contracts they have.

0W-40 would likely be my M1 choice for the 1.8T. For the 2.0L I would likely buy whatever Synthetic you can get a deal on.
Right now thats M1 at Target ($4). M1 5qt at WalMart ($19). PP 5qt at Walmart ($18). Castrol Syntec 6qt at Sam's ($24).

I believe the 0w40 formulation is much differnt than the 5w20, 5w30 and10w30 formulations. To meet that spec and to have the VI would require very high quality base oils.

GC gas mileage is the poo. Worse than Mobil 1 0W-40 in my experience in the VW 1.8T. Gas mileage is a big deal to me given the high gas costs. The difference between some oils can pay for the synthetic oil...that's like getting free oil!

The majority of the VW 2.0 AEG engines around here run of GTX 5w30, courtesy of the local dealership.

0w/40 M1 has some pretty good posted used oil analysis study up the section, don't waste a great imformation resource.. Some are even over 5,000 miles. shocking to some people I'm sure! I can't really imagine differences in mpg with the oils ,GC and M1

I think MPG's are a state of mind. My parents would complain about poor fuel economy and I'd drive both their cars and get 2-3 more mpg's with higher average speeds. I'm talking about 80-90mph on the freeway, 45-55mph around town. But mom does see more stop-and-go traffic. I just know to lift before lights, coast when I can, accel quickly from a stop, but not when you're already at speed, etc.

JAG, when did you switch between GC and Mobil 1 0W40? Did gasoline formulations change at the same time? Around Oct-Nov Kali gas gets even worse and mpg's go down.

M1 carries MB 229.5, GC does not, afiak. However, specs do not make the oil.

I'm looking at a bottle right now, GC is MB 229.1, 229.3, AND 229.5.
This is the newer gold 'euro formula', the older stuff might be different?

It still baffles me how so many people complain that GC gives them worse gas mileage. My wife's Civic is still getting the same MPG now with Syntec 5w30 (at 9.7 cst) as it did with GC at 12.2 cst.

Doesn't your wife do mainly short trips? Maybe her vehicle never really gets into the "zone" where fuel economy is effected. In my case I tried GC in my Honda over a Texas summer and it took a small but significant hit in fuel economy. My other engines, no significant effect.

So what did VW do to the 2.0 to make it require such expensive oil?

The 1.8 in my 1986 Jetta just passed 300k miles

and has never seen VW 502.00 oil or such.

My wife has mostly done a lot of short trips, since her trip to work is only about 10 miles, although the past few months she's been doing a lot more longer trips than usual. Either way you'd think that Syntec 5w30 would offer better MPG than GC, since it's not only thinner at operating temp, but it's most likely thinner on the cold start too (since GC is a rather thick 68cst at 40c and the Syntec 5w30 is probably closer to 60cst)
